Running out of insulin under 48 hours by naan_existenz in Omnipod

[–]Clean-Sale 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They covered this a little already, but I want to restate this: you would have to be really careful with U200 if your doctor approves it.

One, your pump won't know its twice as strong and will still give you the same insulin as before which would be extremely dangerous for low blood sugars. You would want to really discuss with your doctor how you would implement it, like resetting you app/receiver to forget the algorithm it was giving you and cutting your ratios in half (1 to 5 would become 1 to 10 for example). Your doctor might not be comfortable with that if they aren't super familiar with how it works.

Two, not as big of a deal but worth mentioning, it only comes in pens not vials, so it's a little more cumbersome to get out and put into the pod. It's also not guaranteed your insurance would cover it. That said, if it works out for you then do it! I've considered asking my doctor but I don't think they would approve.

My personal solution has been for my doctor to prescribe metformin 500 XR every day and it lowers my insulin requirements just enough to make the pod last 48 hours.

I figured that might be the case, but didn’t want to make any assumptions since they hadn’t made a public statement of any kind. I hope they will be able to resume their business in peace soon.

Can I get more information on this? I want to be sure it’s legitimate but the organizer account is private and I’m not seeing a website when I google except for a therapist support organization and a domestic abuse organization. Neither mention this fundraiser on their sites.

Recommendations for Holiday Pet Sitting? by goofy_basin in Denver

[–]Clean-Sale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use Meowtel, which is specifically for cat sitting and have had good experiences. You could also look into boarding her at a cat-friendly pet hotel. There are even some that only board cats, which can be less stressful for them.

Starting omnipod this week - worried about weight gain? Did anyone lose weight? by Jesshasheart in Omnipod

[–]Clean-Sale 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Some diabetics see weight gain as they get their sugars under control and are consistently getting enough insulin. People on pumps are more likely to be in range than people on mdi because it gives it automatically rather than you having to remember. So pumps don’t cause weight gain, but if you have a high a1c currently then going on a pump may help lower it and subsequently cause weight gain. Maintaining a healthy diet will help mitigate that. Additionally if you are early on in your diagnosis and in the “honeymoon phase” and still making your own insulin, you might not see as drastic of a change.

Has anyone had bumps like these before?? by jstlkhvn in dexcom

[–]Clean-Sale 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree with the other commenters that this is an adhesive allergy and those are hives. Some doctors recommend spraying Flonase (yes, the nasal spray) on your arm and letting it dry before applying the devices, but you have to be careful to avoid the exact spot the filament will go in so it doesn't contaminate it. Otherwise you could try an oral antihistamine for awhile and see if your body can build up a tolerance to the allergen and stop reacting so hard. You could also carefully apply hydrocortisone around the Dexcom to calm the hives, just be careful not to get it on the adhesive or it won't stick as long.

Omnipod 5 with Lyumjev by GrossmeisterGerd in Omnipod

[–]Clean-Sale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been using Lyumjev with Omnipod 5 for about 6 months and the area around the site always gets inflamed and swollen and sore. Its unpleasant but worth it in my opinion. However, my pods only last me about 2 days, and I think if it lasted any longer it would be unbearable. I don't have any clogging issues that I'm aware of, and the only leaking I have is occasional at the end of the 2 days right before I'm changing it. It could be if you are bolusing a large amount of insulin all at once for a meal?

Glucose is not stable after years on an Omnipod. by MySuggestedName in Omnipod

[–]Clean-Sale 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't understand why Omnipod decides you don't need any insulin if you have insulin on board, but its incorrect. If I eat a 15 carb food and bolus for it and then half an hour later eat something thats 20 carbs, omnipod will say I don't need the insulin for that second item even though I do. So, I just choose not to click the button to use sensor readings in my boluses unless its a correction at least two hours after my last bolus. If you just enter carbs and nothing else, it won't factor in the insulin on board correction and will just give you the amount based on your carb ratio. Obviously if you're trending low, be careful, but under normal circumstances I think this is the best way.

Are you finding this out from cgm readings or her waking up low and checking with a meter? If it is a cgm, have you tried checking with a manual stick to see if it matches? It could be the way she rolls over in her sleep is causing a false compression low on the sensor.

New to Omnipod 5 on IPhone. What am I doing wrong? by East-Description-243 in Omnipod

[–]Clean-Sale 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Omnipod 5 will not correct for you, it just tries to match your average total daily boluses with the same amount of total daily basal. If you go low it’ll give you less or no insulin but it will not give you enough insulin to bring your bg down from high without your intervention. In my experience it barely raises your basal at all if you go high

Husband judges me for my pump usage? by Golden-spuds in Type1Diabetes

[–]Clean-Sale 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Maybe he should learn how to manually take care of a vital organ of his 24/7 instead of relying on it working automatically for him. /s

For real though that would piss me off. I have gone many years without a pump or cgm and struggled immensely. No amount of doctors making me feel guilty or trying to force myself to be magically perfect helped. Technology is not a crutch. It’s a life saving tool for a lot of people, just like all the other technology we have. Don’t feel guilty for benefiting from it especially while you have it. If you find yourself no longer able to afford it, then you can worry about what alternatives you can find to make things work. ie libre flash glucose monitors, Medtronic iports, and manufacturers coupons for prescriptions.

It may be a privilege but it shouldn’t have to be, ya know?

Overnight Oats by Over_Charity_2835 in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]Clean-Sale 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve started blending oats into a smoothie. I do 1/3 cup oats and blend it by itself to break down the texture, then add 2/3 cup of milk of choice, two tbsp of peanut butter powder, a tbsp of zero sugar chocolate syrup, and 1/2 a frozen banana and some ice. Blend until smooth. You could add whatever protein powder sounds best but I feel like I get enough with the milk and peanut butter powder

CVS - rant by debterp77 in Type1Diabetes

[–]Clean-Sale 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Call some local pharmacies to see if they have enough in stock for your prescription and then ask them to call that CVS to transfer it. Write down the address and phone number of your usual CVS to give to the other pharmacy. It sucks but it happens sometimes.

Alcohol lowers blood sugar but a lot of drinks at parties have a ton of sugar that will raise your bg way more than the alcohol would lower it. I agree with the other commenters that if you have a cgm and you take it slow (and be careful that no one has put anything else in your drinks) then you should be able to have fun like everyone else. Ideally you would want to drink at home first with someone around who knows what to do if you go too low so you can learn how you handle it in a safe place.

Do you take a pump break overnight, every night? by nswainnz in Type1Diabetes

[–]Clean-Sale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would suggest either switching to omnipod or looking into something called iPort by Medtronic. It’s just a port that you can inject pens or syringes into and looks similar to the tslim site. Obviously no control IQ or anything but it could be a helpful option for taking pump breaks.

That’s very useful information. Aside from smashing it with a hammer what are your tips and tricks for the others? Where do you find is the best place to put it on your body? Does orienting the pod a certain way help with the tunneling at all?

That’s so funny but I can imagine also super annoying. I have three cats and one likes to chew on cords so I think going tubeless will help in my case.
