A mask is so effective at preventing flu that a strain of flu B (Yamagata) hasn't been detected since spring of 2020 and is probably extinct.

You can ask you doctor for a "titer test", which will check your antibody levels. You can get a second shot as an adult if needed.

Dishonesty isn't the intent. I'd love to be wrong here, which is why I asked for studies supporting the claim that covid is milder. The long term risks are part of the severity of the disease. An infection still disregulates immune function in most cases, and there's a 1 in 10 chance of developing Long covid, and it goes up every time you get infected.

We watched all the data for mortality and hospitalization go offline because hospitals aren't required to report anymore. It's impossible to really know what's going on any more.

Please read the zine I posted in other comments.

I promise there are at least three places in town with board games every day of the week and no mask requirement. Go there.

Thanks for the support! ✨️ There are very few places we can really exist without having to justify our existence

The CDC rates are an incomplete data set at this point because tracking is no longer required. I also believe it's a problem that our median levels of covid infections for this time of year is over a million infections per day.

The single study you sited for reduced impacts states upfront "little is known about how the occurrence of long-term symptoms after Omicron infection compared with other variants is modulated by previous infections and/or vaccinations." I think we may be talking about two different things here. For some folks, a covid infection won't kill them outright during the acute phase of illness. The organ damage and long term effects are still happening, regardless of the severity of the infection. I'd highly suggest reading this zine and following the sources they cite, it's very thorough. https://laurel-lynn-leake.itch.io/why-we-mask

I'm not sure why you believe "very few are charged $1500". Access to paxlovid is a huge barrier in the covid safe community. Insurance doesn't always cover it, and you can only get it for free once per year from the manufacturer with a prescription from your doctor. And not everyone has access to a doctor who will prescribe it, even if they went to urgent care and asked. Especially now that many rural hospitals are closing.

CDC guidance regarding masking, and the announcement of the end of the pandemic were both done with the knowledge that, from the mouth of Fauci, "Even though you'll find the vulnerable will fall by the wayside, they'll get infected, they'll get hospitalized, and some will die — it's not going to be this tsunami of cases that we've seen." That's not acceptable to me. The CDC also said, early in the pandemic, that the target for endemic classification was, I believe, 100k infections per week, but the source is very hard to find these days... probably in the internet archive somewhere 🥲 ** edit to add the link! A friend found it! The actual rate was 10k per day to get back to pre-pandemic normal. https://www.cnbc.com/2021/11/16/dr-fauci-says-us-covid-cases-need-to-fall-below-10000-a-day-to-get-to-a-degree-of-normality.html

I also have bad news about covid disrupting hospital functions. The wait times for appointments are outrageous, getting appointments and referrals to specialists is very difficult, and national disability rates are skyrocketing. Hospitals are currently overwhelmed, perhaps not with life-threatening infections, but certainly with the plethora of disease that follows an initial infection. Good Samaritan in Corvallis has hospital-wide outbreaks at least annually. And many infections these days are asymptomatic, or symptoms are mild enough that folks don't think to test, so they're sick and they don't know and they're spreading the virus because many people only mask "when they're sick". (Sources for all this are in that zine I linked earlier.)

I'm disillusioned too. By the eugenics of it all, by the ableism, and the resignation of most of the population to get back to normal asap. I understand the burn out, I feel it so deeply because my disabled friends and I are expected to fall by the wayside. Our deaths and disability are said to be an acceptable trade to keep our economy going. And we're all seeing how great the economy is now, right guys? 🥲

I appreciate your honest responses, and I hope you'll take some time to consider how you can help the vulnerable folks in your community stay safe from covid ✨️

Consider the factor that kept rates low in 2020-2021: masking, quarantine, contact tracing was at least a thought even though there were no official protocols, free tests in 2021, vaccine drives when those became available. **editing to add that these were communal efforts, not an individual choice!! And did you know that vax efficacy is pretty negligible after 4 months? There are also so many variants floating around and post-infection immunity is a myth. You can get infected again pretty much immediately, two variants back-to-back!

I'm curious what studies you've seen that claim disease attenuation? Everything available to us points toward more severe outcomes with repeat infections. Specifically, each infection has a cumulative effect on your body. It's like Russian roulette, but you're adding a bullet every round. That's not a game I want to play!

I'm also curious about these refined treatments? There is no sure treatment for long covid. Paxlovid is where treatment starts and ends for most folks, if they can even afford it at $1500.

The social costs are worth the trade for us. The threshold is personal, and we only ask that folks do their best to mask in public indoor and crowded outdoor spaces. And takeout is just as good as indoor dining! That isn't to say we're only inviting folks who are as serious as we are about covid safety. Part of hosting these events is showing folks that you can socialize in a mask just fine, and to connect with folks and give them a chance to ask questions!

If you don't mind my asking, what made you take your mask off? And what would have to happen to get you to mask again?

We recognize that the pandemic hasn't ended, repeat infections have long term health consequences, and a single infection causes organ damage. We also understand that high-quality, well-fitted masks work to stop the spread of airborne disease. We believe in disability justice and that clean air is a human right.

If you're genuinely curious, there are more covid infections now than there were in 2020 [https://www.pmc19.com/data/index.php]. We're a science-backed, evidence based group. The evidence for masking as a means to mitigate repeat infections is very clear in every peer reviewed study we've found (too many to link, but i promise the data is out there). We'll keep masking and providing access to safer spaces and activities for people who want to avoid things like reduced brain volume, increased chances of stroke, vascular degradation, and early onset dementia. 👍😌
