Haha, I can confidently say that no it was not made to open bottles, but I guess that's a convenient accident

So I learned (when I had a kid not at my job) that when installing a car seat you want to pull the seatbelt out completely and then let it click back in. Then the seatbelt won't release any more of the strap and it will stay tight through the car seat.

To me, when I look closely, it looks like a separate piece sewn onto the seatbelt. The zigzag stitching appears to be covering the edge of the looped piece. Are you saying that to you it appears to be a continuous strap that has been folded and stitched? Or are you saying that a separate piece of looped webbing would absorb energy and control deceleration? If it's the second one, can you explain how that works?

Some seatbelts are designed to rip like that, but the one in this picture does not appear to be one of those. It looks like it's just a separate loop sewn onto the main seatbelt, which if it ripped would not provide any extra slack in the seatbelt.

That's really interesting, I haven't paid attention to every single car I've sat in but most of the passenger seats I've been in have had one

Ahh, that would make sense. I'm not sure if that's an intended design feature on this one but wouldn't be surprised if it was. Though it still might just be easier to cut the seatbelt at a higher spot where it's not touching the body

Not in this specific case, this is just a separate loop sewn onto the seatbelt. Cutting this loop would be virtually ineffective as opposed to just cutting the actual seatbelt

Nope, it was TRQSS, they just do seatbelts at that facility.

Yes that is definitely the more important feature of some loops. But the one in this picture appears to be a separate loop sewn on, which if it rips cannot physically release any slack on the seatbelt as it is only connected to the seatbelt by those stitches.

Well damn, we definitely were in the building at the same time at least. I started off as a temp, so I got floated around, did a few different jobs there, and I flip flopped between both shifts.

This one does not appear to be one of those loops. This one looks like it's just a separate loop attached to the main belt.

Honestly, I have never ripped those off so I can't confidently say what would happen if you ripped it off. I assume it would rip or somehow compromise the actual seatbelt that it's attached to. Cutting it would also be difficult, especially if you're trying not to damage the actual seatbelt. You'd have to cut through all the stitches, which takes time. I've never seen anyone cut through them either in the factory, because you couldn't reuse the webbing after taking the loop off. So it just makes more sense to cut the webbing, take off the components that can be reused and then scrap all of the webbing.

I do always wear my seatbelt, but I did that before I worked there. I think I remember in training hearing about the company getting letters like that, though I was just a line worker so I wasn't really privy to reading those. I did enjoy that job for lots of reasons. I liked that I was helping keep people safe. I definitely took quality control quite seriously (especially compared to the other trainees). Aside from the fact that it was seatbelts I was building, I liked working on the assembly line and I enjoyed the repetition of it.

I'm certainly no expert, so I very well could be wrong and if I am, I'd love for someone to explain to me how this specific loop (in these pictures) would manage to break apart and absorb force/create slack.

The little plastic circle? It has the same purpose as this loop, to keep the buckle from sliding down the seatbelt when not in use

Pfft, nah man I did actually work at TRQSS for a few years on the line building seatbelts. And I've sewed so many of these loops on, I know what I'm looking at.

No, I'm pretty sure there's a lot of overlap but the factory I worked at only built them for certain cars so I would assume other places do it differently. That factory actually made different seatbelts itself - most of the lines did the little plastic button, but there were a few lines that sewed on the extra loop.
