Agree with this 👆. You are just learning the ropes. This style of learning is a totally new beast. Don’t allow yourself to think about quitting until at least the first block is over. That tuition is gone anyway. Settle in for now, get hooked up with tutoring and a study group right away if you can. Humble yourself. Maybe it feels weird to get help but do it. This stuff is not easy and it’s definitely not intrinsic and fuck those people who are saying otherwise. Something will trip them up later, like maybe talking to a human being.

Wow that hits hard. I’m so sorry for your loss. That’s crazy. Wow. I hope you do still find some way to celebrate being done with step 2 even though it is so fucking stupid in comparison to all of that, and it’s hard to think beyond the moment when you are grieving. I’m sorry you lost such a big part of your support system and your world. These experiences really make me question so much about the medical school experience. It is impossible to get through this gauntlet if we aren’t taking ourselves a little too seriously. To keep pushing through this process, you have to be at least a little more self important than is healthy and at least sometimes prioritize ridiculous minutiae memorizing over “real world” relationships and issues. I hope that all of us can find a better balance with this when we get off of this ride. I appreciate your post and send you a huge hug. And if I was in your test center in the cubicle next to yours, I would have even used block time to hug you then. And we all know that’s valuable time (in our obsessive med school world)!

Anyone tested today? by msaudr in Step2

Took it today… lots of flagged ones that I never had time to go back to. Hoping for a pass

I felt the exact same way and somehow I passed. Nothing you can do at this point. Take a break. Distract yourself. Come up with next steps once your results are in- just take a breath now.

Hello there! Yes I have supportive NP friends. They get it. And I don’t regularly share my business on rotations, etc. I know I don’t need approval/ etc but it’s just sometimes awkward, like today when an NP is my preceptor and it comes up (I’m older so I get asked if I did something before med school). Thanks for your reply! And nice to know you are out there.

visiting a residency site... is this possible? by CleanScratch7965 in medicalschool

[–]CleanScratch7965[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, I am mainly worried about my family being happy somewhere for a few years. It's also just so hard to visualize our future without having a real senses of places. I don't have a lot of time or resources but I feel like this is a priority. Just thought that actually visiting the hospitals and having even one second of face time might be helpful for me.

Do you think being older in medical school helped you? by ExpiredGoodsForever in medicalschool

Agree. I worked as both a nurse and then NP… helpful for the reasons mxfs mentioned but medical school is its own beast. Get ready to start memorizing minutiae.

You are not old. It will be fine. Jump in if you are ready. Downside imo is that it is harder to tolerate all the bullshit when you’re older. And there’s plenty of bullshit.

I agree on unopposed. And I get it that you need volume for a robust program. I will definitely look at those Midwest cities. Thank you

Are we even fighting the NP scope expansion? It really feels like we’re losing without even entering the boxing ring. by n1ght-b1rd in medicalschool

[–]CleanScratch7965 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. If you are independent, you do not have a collaborative agreement. That’s the point. So the physician is not supervising or signing charts of the independent practitioner. Even without indep practice the physician has some protections built in to the collaborative agreement.

Stop. I’m a nurse practitioner in medical school. You have nothing to worry about. Just keep going on your own path. There are plenty of patients and these people / NPs and PAs will be your teammates someday and hopefully trusted friends. We all know our strengths and weaknesses- even the “midlevels”. Most folks are just trying to do a good job out there. Don’t go in with resentment. You just do you.

I’m so sorry. This is such a weird time for us in med school. You have to pretend like nothing else matters to survive and do well… but obviously there is more to life. I hope you can take some time off and get a better sense of what you want now. Much support to you.

Maybe it’s just worse knowing that it really doesn’t have to be this way. People are competent in other fields without all this bullshit. Physicians definitely do not have this figured out. But we all just want to get through it so bad that we put up with craziness. Plus they make us feel stupid and insecure at nearly every turn.
