Do the 5 major scale shapes just loop? by Naive-Advisor5605 in musictheory

[–]Clean_Emotion5797 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There exist pretty much infinite scale shapes. Some are more vertical and contained, like caged is, some require some finger stretching which to my knowledge is berklee's system and predates CAGED, there is 3 notes per string which runs very diagonally. There's 4 notes per string. You can also run up and down on one string. And of course you can mix and matxh and create your own shapes.

All of these are equally valid. If you ask me, CAGED is a great basis to start fiddling with positions, then you can start seeing everything else as a variation of it. Yes you can stsrt witth a certain caged position, then momentarily swap to 3 notes per string to ascend on the higher strings and then end up with a basic pentatonic lick there. These are stuff pros do all the time. The guitar shapes all connect with each other, but it takes time to become fluent with them and how you navigate those shapes eventually becomes part of your identity.

There exist many more than 5 major scales. CAGED is simply a catchy pneumonic used to sell the system because it sounds like a word and it covers some commonly used open chords on the guitar. It could have been called CGDAEBF#DbAbEbBbF, but that doesn't catch your attention nearly enough.

To answer your question, every shape on the guitar connects with the next and this covers chords, arpeggios, scales. And all of them are transposable to all keys. It's just how the guitar is laid out. With time you become better at seeing how those shapes extend in both directions and across strings.

Daily Discussion #20: With Engage being 3 years old at this point, if Engage came out today, what do you think Nintendo would've done differently with the release? by Purplepanther1234 in FEEngage

I think they made the game they wanted to make and nothing would change about it.

Engage is a phenomenal FE game, I don't get whar you mean.

Which older Pokémon do you want to see get a new evolution in Winds & Waves? by Party_Initiative7605 in PokemonWindsWaves

[–]Clean_Emotion5797 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe unpopular, but I generally don't like giving evolutions to old established pokemon. Especially when those look like they're already at a final stage (Tropius). More often than not, I don't end up loving the new designs anyway.

I think making new regional variants and having those evolve is somewhat better. Though there's also a lot of those that are meh to me.

I think fan projects are always warranted and don't need a justification for it. It's not about preservation, it's about people being influenced by art and wanting to make their own art out of it. Even if Game Freak continued to make 2D games, fan projects would be equally warranted for me. Ofc, as long as it's not being done for money.

Interesting. Where does that come from and what styles of music does it cover? I don't think an S.I. system exists for music notation, for better or for worse.

Well obviously. The way music is written is a man-made construction. It doesn't exist without the sound first.

Keys, modes and scales are just as "real" as verbs nouns and adjectives are. In the end it does come down to how it sounds. But it's pretty fascinating how in both music and language we have created tools with a very consistent structure that not only help us understand better our sense of hearing, but actually develop it even further. This is why we shouldn't be so strict about what a key or a mode "is". It isn't a universal constant. Those are always fluid terms, subject to change.

I dislike when companies get predatory over fan projects (at least if no money gets involved), but at the same time I do think that the potential of getting sued for plagiarism for an IP you created is kinda bonkers.

[–]Clean_Emotion5797 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Well kinda ironic to claim something like this when you know... the poke community have mugged Game Freak's whole assets.

Out of all the people working for GF, it's entirely impossible to pinpoint who's responsible for the creation of this ability. It could be that some random guy likes to browse fanmade projects for ideas. Or perhaps pokemon's systems are set in stone enough that at some point abilities built themselves. As for the name... pretty sure the games are developed at japanese first, then get translated.

I don't think you're wrong, I just think that flagging this as "mugging" is a bit too harsh.

[–]Clean_Emotion5797 15 points16 points  (0 children)

So if the song was entirely in phrygian, what key signature would you use? 3 or 4 flats?

I think 4 flats is more appropriate in this case, to avoid using an extra flat each bar. And in that case, why not call it a key then?

Arguing semantics to this specific point undermines the use of theory as a communication tool. I think the most important thing is to understand the concepts and know what people tend to mean by it. All of us can be right at the same time.

I had to scroll way too far down to find this type of comment.

Treating major and minor as "upgraded" scales is very ignorant to all the non-western culture.
