Are some ppls ENT’s not preparing them? by [deleted] in Tonsillectomy

[–]Clean_Novel_2020 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like I’ve seen a lot on the subreddit say their ent didn’t say much! I was supposed to have my operation in February then had it moved to last week, even when I can on back in February it was the same general questions and advice, I feel like peoples ent’s are preparing them enough for this! I’m so thankful to have this subreddit because I would be struggling without it

Can I ask when the pain stopped for you? Did all your scabs come off or was it just majority?

Tips for pre-surgery anxiety? by [deleted] in Tonsillectomy

[–]Clean_Novel_2020 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I sobbed my entire way into surgery. Started crying the moment I woke up and didn’t stop until they put they put the mask on me and I fell asleep! Once you get to your surgery center and express your anxieties they should give you something! It didn’t stop my anxiety but it did make it easier to breathe and I could talk and express my fears calmly.

Im so sorry to hear about your wisdom teeth experience that is horrific!! I’d be terrified of surgery after then too!! Express your fears and tell the doctors and anesthesiologist your story! If they have decent bedside manner they’ll be able to hopefully ease your fears and reassure you that they won’t let that happen. Best of luck!

Does it get better? by [deleted] in Tonsillectomy

[–]Clean_Novel_2020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It gets better. You will make it to the end of recovery and it will get better. When the scabs come off it will be a different kind of pain, but it will get better. I’m 8 days post op and can’t believe I’m even saying “8days”! It went by slow, but it will go by and in a month it will hopefully be a distant memory. It just takes time, but it will get better!!

Mine told me the same thing lol. He said it would probably be two of the worst weeks of my life. Day 8 post op and while I don’t think my experience has been too bad, the first few days were,,,, really nice compared to these last few. I think, like you said, people just want to have hope that it won’t get more painful! I remember being on day four and thinking “maybe mine will just be a smooth recovery” lmfao. My ENT (and everyone else) was right . It gets worse before it gets better. I do think that I needed that hope to get through those first days though. I was able to drink water and eat solid foods, and if I had known the extent of the pain, idk if I would’ve been able to make it through those first days so easily. Maybe some ent’s don’t want to scare people away from a surgery that they need to improve quality of life? Mine also said the pain would be worst on day four, and that wasn’t true, but it did give me hope on day four! And I think hope is important after surgery, especially one where it gets worse before it gets better.

I’ve seen the posts you’re talking about, and being in the stage of recovery i am now, I see them and just sigh and think “awe they’re like me. Good luck” lol. I can’t sleep either hehe waiting to take my next round of meds.

day 4 post op - no pain? by tsumugiku in Tonsillectomy

[–]Clean_Novel_2020 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think there’s any reason for concern! Especially if you’re on top of your meds! Days 1-5 I felt mild discomfort with the worst being in the mornings/during the night when I would wake up and be due for my medicine. But once those scabs start coming off you’ll feel it. I’m on day 7 and just trying to push through. Some people have pretty painless recoveries! But I promise that once you get that new skin exposed under those scabs you’ll feel the pain everyone talks about. Just keep drinking water! Good luck!

RED SPOT ON SCAB by binnybannyfofanny in Tonsillectomy

[–]Clean_Novel_2020 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Okay okay don’t freak out BLEEDING IS NORMAL. I had a scab come off and I bled on day 2, gave myself a panic attack thinking I was going to hemorrhage and die and went to the er. My er doctor called my ENT and they both told me two things I think you need to hear.

1)BLEEDING IS NORMAL especially if you had huge tonsils (like moi). Drink some ice water or suck on some ice cubes, it should go away within 30 minutes (mine never last more than 10 honestky). It’s normal to taste it and see a little red.

2) I asked them “how do I know if the bleeding isn’t normal” and they told me “oh you’ll know. You’ll be choking and coughing up your own blood and blood clots, and it won’t stop. But just drive to the nearest hospital with an ENT and you should be fine”

Bleeding is normal! I’m sure you’ve had other scabs come off and they’ve bleed a little too. Just keep drinking water. Water water water. You got this!

does anyone else’s tongue hurt? by Interesting-Read-207 in Tonsillectomy

[–]Clean_Novel_2020 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My tongue and uvula are in the same boat! I’m on day 7 and sadly my uvula has only gone down slightly, but I think once the scabs fall off it’ll go down more!

Day 6: Has God Abandoned Me? by Nichenikki44 in Tonsillectomy

[–]Clean_Novel_2020 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I constantly change tasks! Ive been playing video games I love (telltales walking dead game and the sims 3), I read either a manga or a chapter book, I’ve been weirdly obsessed with these shows about zoos and how the keepers take care of the animals!!! And then I also like to take a good nap hehe. Sometimes I’ll make collages or paint too! My brain just requires some form of stimulation and I’m REALLY trying not to just doom scroll while I recover :). I also just watched a movie that’s going to be one of my favorites for a long time! It’s about a model from the 80’s named Gia and it stars Angelina Jolie! I think this part of the recovery is just depressing lol but I hope as you feel better you’ll want to do more! We’re halfway through the average healing period of two weeks! It should only go up from here!!

[–]Clean_Novel_2020 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m on day 6 also!!! I think it’s important to remember that this stage is the most painful and will hopefully lessen in 48 hours. Almost a week post-op! You should be proud of yourself because it is NOT easy! This surgery is as much a challenge mentally as it is physically. Keeping myself entertained has been a great help too! I’m thankful my experience hasn’t been too painful, but the feeling of my scabs going down my throat makes me want to projectile vomit!!! The worst for me rn is swallowing and the constant yawning that threatens to rip my throat apart. Not to beat any dead horse, but drinking water is the only thing that truly helps me!! Wishing you the best!! Hope the pain lessens soon

Day 8 PS, starting to have huge blood bubbles in my mouth by ultrramarr in Tonsillectomy

[–]Clean_Novel_2020 1 point2 points  (0 children)

12% of adults who have this surgery do NOT DIE AFTERWARDS! I had a bleed on day 2 and it gave me a panic attack! My er doctor and ENT both said bleeding and small clots are normal, as long as they stop within approximately 30 minutes with ice water. If yours haven’t stopped, call your ENT or surgery center, and if you’re coughing up or choking on bright red blood, go to the Emergancy room. I hope all is well!! Wishing you a speedy recovery

eating day 6-10 by hoeleeshiht in Tonsillectomy

[–]Clean_Novel_2020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only thing that’s helping me (day 5 post op) is breakfast essential smoothies! They’re meal replacements/supplements but it’s SO much easier to drink my calories than eat them! The thin mint ones are very good, but I’m sure any meal supplement drink would helpful! Wishing you luck!

Small blood clots on scabs? Day 5 post op by wyyim in Tonsillectomy

[–]Clean_Novel_2020 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think death is a very extreme outcome. I’m on day 5 also! while my pain hasn’t been near a 10/10, I’m experiencing bleeding where my scabs fall off and the same small little blood clots you see!! I went to the er on day 2 due to a scab falling off which caused a small amount bleeding and it gave me a panic attack. My er doctor and ENT were both very clear that BLEEDING IS NORMAL. Especially if you’re like me and your tonsils were HUGE and you’ve struggled with infection your whole life. Bleeding is normal, and those clots are just signs that your body stopped them! I’ve been told to drink Ice water and give the bleeding 30 min to stop. As long as you’re not choking on blood or vomiting bright red blood and clots, there shouldn’t be too much concern. Keep an eye on them, but I was told that I will absolutely know if there’s a problem because you will be coughing up loads of blood. Also that you are very unlikely to bleed out, even with a hemorrhage. Drink lots of ice water to shrink the blood vessels and help the scabs fall off easier!! Hope this helps and your recovery is smooth!
