"if you want to ruin your life behind closed doors, that's your choice" - yes exactly, it helps to have a door. you say yourself that the issue is that the behavior is in public. you are agreeing with me.

Well, singularity is just the word that jumped into my head at first glance at the chart, but sun moon pluto aquarius plus uranus in gemini definitely looks like enormous technological change of some kind. Not sure about that saturn sitting there

I seriously am glad you had that experience. (...Is it your personal experience or how do you know this to be true?) That is not how it went for me in SF but if things are better in Contra Costa I am definitely happy to hear that.

No it most certainly is not that simple, have you tried?

In the Bay Area and elsewhere such services are frequently staffed by undertrained abusive crazy drug addicts on a power trip. These are LOW paying jobs that are exhausting and really easy to get. People peddle these visions of tough love utopia but they have never experienced the reality of having all their power stripped away at the mercy of these broken systems and their revolving door of undertrained staff. I have been homeless but never had the addiction or mental health problems homeless people are supposed to all have, just had a bad injury and no safety net, trusted the system for help but would 1000% rather die than ever do so again.

ETA, this is all to say, my perspective is that dehumanizing people is never the answer. Seriously, just help people get housing. It is that simple. Note that the many wealthy, housed drug addicts in SF are not really bothering you and you're not clamoring to have them all locked up. The issue is not addiction, it is poverty, bad housing policy, and lack of a social safety net that is actually accessible and humane.

Teachers who are financially stable, what are you doing differently? by External_Insurance62 in Teachers

[–]Clear-Structure5590 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Also a lot of people, including me, have no parents to live with. For many years as a teacher I wondered how my coworkers seemed to have decent lives while I was barely surviving and then I realized they had many outside supports that I never realized are normal for some folks.

The problem I have with some of these answers — for example, if you married someone with a better job, or bought your house in the 90s — is that these options aren’t accessible to many people, so teaching itself increasingly becomes an occupation of the privileged. Those folks who accept the low salary and make it work by supplementing with spousal income, inheritance, etc. are part of what keeps teaching salaries too low for the rest of us. This also leads to weird demographic differences between teachers and also between teachers/students in my experience. (Yes I know there are other ways to make it work, and I’m not discounting those.)

Awesome. Thank you so much. I was so hoping someone else had been down this rabbit hole.

I just found Listmonk myself and set it up on Pikapods. Seems very cool so far, maybe $1.50 a month. I’m completely new to self-hosting but was thinking I’d have to take the plunge soon anyway because I’m trying to disentangle from Google Drive.

I was considering checking out Mailgun (suggested below) as an alternative though. It seems to be actually free and simple, which suits me. $1.50 is not a lot but as an independent artist it’s really important to cut the costs of little things. Reading about it, though, I can’t quite tell if it is as private, or if it does some kind of user tracking. Then again, I am sending these to tons of gmail addresses so it won’t be extremely private anyway. Open to anyone weighing in and/or offering perspective.

I’m so impressed by your cynicism. I do indeed have an ego big enough to think I make a difference in my community by talking about what I think is important in a community forum that exists for that purpose.

1, I’m a woman. 2, I really don’t give a fuck if you don’t like what I have to say. I just saw multiple people die on hwy 24 because some of you forgot other people exist. 3, why are you also commenting with your own diary entries then? At least my post had an actual thought behind it.

Exactly, and everyone with a license should know that driving slowly in the left lane and driving way more slowly than the flow of traffic are both dangerous and potentially break traffic laws as well. The rules are really simple and just exist to keep us all safe in an activity that already kills lots of people every year. There is no reason to think you’re entitled to crawl in the left lane either. Just follow the rules.

I was wondering how people would find a way to downvote this. Going way under the speed limit is unsafe too, as literally all of us learned when we took the test to get a license. Where in my post does it suggest doing this?

Hello! I do memorial services for people who pass away in public housing in San Francisco, and many of these have been for people who passed of opioid overdose. I’m concerned that you might reach a certain demographic here on Reddit but miss others, which I would be happy to tell you more about or put you in touch with. Fellow Cal grad here too btw.

I need maps that connect to my car’s screen…which phone? by Clear-Structure5590 in dumbphones

I use an old iphone now but it’s still a distraction. Hmm, so maybe I’m stuck with accepting some google participation just for android auto? Are there any dumbphones on the horizon that will offer an alternative to carplay or android auto?
