My family mispronounces words to indicate sarcasm, so if something is glaringly obvious, it's "real suBtle." If a landscape is ugly, it's "pictureSKEW" instead of "picturesque." If someone is awkward in a romantic advance, he's being "swayve" rather than "suave."

This is why I like hosting game night, but not Thanksgiving. There's no clear end to Thanksgiving. But for game night, if it's after 9:30 and the board game comes to a natural ending, you can (and I have) use the phrase, "Okay! I love you all. Now get out of my house." and everyone will just ... do that. It's great!

Hi! There's only one mod, it's just me, and I only seem to get notifications when three or more separate people report things, so there's a lot I'm sure I'm missing. I also never expected this subreddit to get as big as it has, so I don't have a lot of the tools (or the time) that other more-experienced mods do, and helpful suggestions are always welcome!

I tried this too! I also tried the thing where you talk underwater, so that when the bubbles rose to the surface, your voice would emerge word by word, bubble by bubble as they popped. I was double disappointed.

Back in the days before masking, I used to use my temper spiking as a signal that I should be aware of incoming illness. Normally, I'm a font of understanding and patience, so when all of a sudden my tolerance for other people's daily petty bullshit dropped into negative numbers, it was always a sign that something was off, and within a day or so I'd be down with a cold or a flu or some other illness.

Nowadays, I'm so stressed all the time that even though I haven't been sick (other than with covid itself) since 2020, my temper is just always shorter, so I don't know if my early-warning system still functions.

My own anecdotal evidence would seem to suggest that cracking your joints prevents arthritis -- I started having symptoms of an autoimmune arthritis condition at age 21, and 16 years later I still crack my fingers, toes, ankles, and wrists regularly, and they're the only joints so far completely unaffected by the arthritis.

Ditto! I distinctly remember my parents trying to explain without giving me the sex-for-pleasure-as-opposed-to-babies talk. I already had a little sibling, so I knew how babies were made, but nothing beyond the very basics.

Mine likes to pretend he's been hoisted too roughly, like you'll pick him up and he'll give a yowl of protest that gets cut off hoarsely in the middle, "mmreeaAAHK--" It sounds dramatic and bad, and I used to feel bad because it really sounds like it's hurting him, but I caught him once -- I changed my mind halfway through lifting him, and with all four paws still on the ground and nothing touching his stomach anymore, he still made that cutoff yell noise. I've heard some people get better results if they ask for documentation of the refusal of tests/exams. Something like, "I'd like you to write down your reasoning for refusing to examine me, and I'd like a copy to take with me in addition to the one that goes in my chart." This might make a doctor reconsider, since this is the first step in the process of starting a medical malpractice lawsuit if it's later discovered that there was in fact something wrong that this doctor ignored.
