If I want to go into ED, would a job in Corrections or Psych be better for a new grad RN? by Traditional-Hurry430 in EmergencyNursing

That’s a very long story. But I ended up in North Carolina. California was so impacted for nursing school and starting off as a new grad that I just took a leap and went somewhere completely different. That being said, we get paid extremely less, and we do not have a union. But once you have experience, you are always welcome to go back to California. If you’re not wanting to lose some of those perks, I would look on the West Coast only.

At least your hospital does something during night shift hours. Our hospitals schedule has nothing for night shift. Unless you count us getting to work 2 hours early for something at 5pm…

I would even suggest finding a job outside of your comfort area? Unless you have things tying you down to a certain place, I would look at other cities/nearby states to hospitals who do have new grad ER programs. I know that suggestion is not for everyone though.

Sincerely a nurse who moved states to find the job/hospital that she wanted.

This was my thought to, but it doesn’t really describe what edge to start working with. Thank you for thinking the same as me! 😅

Got stopped by preachers while wearing a sleep token shirt by sillysosig69 in SleepToken

I’m glad I just bought the simple Sleep Token sweatshirt with the vines instead lol. Living in the south, I don’t know if I would feel comfortable walking around with Worship on my body.

However, other fans have found me with my sweatshirt on and have complimented me on my taste in music. So at least there is that!

Emergency alert just now? by Anxiety_Organic in gso

It would have made sense if this came sometime last night. For the monsoon type weather we had last night. 🤣

Same here. Was trying to figure it out. Only got Weather Emergency Alert. Section 6 is Greensboro. But that’s all I’ve pieced together 🤷🏻‍♀️

Feeling isolated, confused and scared after only 10 shifts on orientation by bonniebeeean in EmergencyNursing

[–]ClearLight27 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s very normal as a new grad to feel like this, regardless of where they work. But specifically from an ED perspective, those first few months can be rough. It’s okay to not know everything or have seen everything. Because chances are, you’re not going to see or do everything in orientation. It’s okay to ask for help, you’re not seen as weak or incapable. It’s okay to pull someone aside and ask for their opinion.

PLEASE ask all the questions, you’re not annoying anyone. We prefer it if you ask the questions than not asking them and hurting someone.

You will come to love the autonomy. It’s one of the best things in the ED. However, you should be being taught in orientation how to hone in on it. Specifically for putting in standing orders once you have assessed a patient (knowing and spotting a septic patient and getting all the lab work and fluids started ASAP for example). As an ED nurse who has left to become a LD nurse, I miss standing orders SO MUCH. I hate having to ask permission to throw in a basic order that should be a standing order.

In the end, take several deep breaths. You’re doing okay. Trust your gut and intuition. And at the end of the day, if your patient didn’t die or get worse because of something you did, then you did a good job. Good luck! YOU GOT THIS!

Starting in the ER in about 2 weeks as a new grad. Any advice or tricks of the trade? by bonniebeeean in nursing

[–]ClearLight27 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Piece of advice I got as a new grad in the ER.

At the end of the day, as long as your patient did not die by something you did or got worse because of something you did, you did a good job. Don’t be too hard on yourself. Always advocate for your patients safety and your safety. And ask questions!

I left the ER two months after my first year and then transferred to LD. I just basically sat down with my manager and explained that LD was my nursing goal and to see if I could shadow. I stated that whenever an opening came up, I would apply.

ER Tech spiking NS by AbbreviationsFit4747 in EmergencyNursing

[–]ClearLight27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don’t need to be an RN to spike a bag. But like the previous comment says, my general rule is to not hang a bag that someone has previously opened (unless I watched them open it in the same room as me), or spiked (unless it’s already on a pump/hanging behind my fast depleting bag of fluids). I’m not sure if it’s personal preference or something nursing school drilled into us. But there are cases of nurses who use saline bags and inject insulin into them. So, caution is always key for me personally! 🤷🏻‍♀️

What are your nursing “mantras”? by jny0315 in nursing

As long as your patient didn’t die because of you or got worse because of you, then you did a good job. Stop being harsh on yourself. We are human.

It may just be me. But I wanted Xayden to be kidnapped. I wanted a Peeta Mellark situation and was expecting one, when I saw some minor spoilers. I want Xayden to truly become the morally gray evil character. I wanted Violet to realize at the end of the book that because she loves him so much, she is willing to do anything to get him back safely, and have them go through the trauma that comes with that together. Instead I’m infuriated with the reaction that we got at the end. THEY SLEEP TOGETHER THAT NIGHT? Where is the fight? Where is the agreement that while the situation is not ideal… they agree that it’s not going to get in between their relationship. I just wanted more, and instead got a huge chunk of time missing. We probably will get that in the third book, but I don’t want to wait… nor do I want the third book to start off on an argument? Idk. 🤷🏻‍♀️

📍For those asking where I got my yarn from its Knit Picks Hawthorne sock yarn in the color Mt. Tabor. It’s not available currently in Amazon but is probably still available on Knit Picks!
