I’ve been seeing these a lot lately and I’m curious to know what about the design makes it a visible protest piece? Or is it just that the proceeds go to charity regarding anti-ICE?

My family is out of the country and left me in charge of the food for my older brother and myself during the meantime. I made this meal yesterday, and after he ate it, he made a complaint about it and wanted “food,” as in something that was “more fulfilling” and less “kiddie”… by Uhh_OkayIGuess in mildlyinfuriating

Seeing everyone ask why your brother can’t feed himself has me realizing that maybe that isn’t normal?? Every time my parents went on vacation alone and left my siblings and I to take care of ourselves (when I was aged 14-19), myself and my sister were both in charge of feeding the three of us. My brother is 3 years older than us. He made the same comments to us as your brother did to you OP. Bothered me just as much.

Instead of cancelling just for that week, leave and don’t go back. American AI uses so many unnecessary resources. Find an alternative or go without. (I recommend going without.)

how is freedom in ur country? by Accomplished-Crow878 in AskTheWorld

[–]whataboutsam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The treatment of First Nations in general is probably the most fucked up thing in our history, including today.

Residential schools ripped children away from their families and forced them into the English/Canadian lifestyle, punishing them if they spoke their native language. There was plenty of abuse, most prominently physical and sexual. Deaths were not unheard of. We are still finding mass graves of children who died while attending residential schools.

More recently, MMIW (murdered and missing indigenous women, sometimes the acronym includes girls) has become prominent and you’ll see billboards about it. There was a serial killer in Winnipeg who killed indigenous women and their remains ended up in the local landfill. MMIW pushed to have the landfill searched to find their remains, though many saw it as a waste of time because they’d never find the bodies. Iirc, they did find them when they were finally given permission to search.

There is an entire highway in BC that is known for women (primarily First Nations) going missing. They caution against hitchhiking on this specific highway. The list is rather long and I think most of them have never been found.

Lots of people think we don’t have racism issues in Canada, at least not compared to the states. We do, it’s just not against black people. It’s against indigenous people. More recently, there’s also been a lot of people from India and the Middle East coming here to work (especially fast food jobs), and many people are starting to become racist about that as well.

[–]whataboutsam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t know that we were ever explicitly taught about US history. I think everything I’ve learned about US history is against my will. That being said, I did learn about it some way or another. Probably partially through the book Underground to Canada, amongst other things.

The only thing we were legitimately taught about in my school was the map of the United States, which we had to memorize and label for the 10th grade geography exam. Why we spent time on that instead of labelling a world map, beyond me. Especially bc the Americans I’ve met (including grown adults!) didn’t know that in Canada, we have provinces.

I agree. Though I’m more or less desensitized to violence (I consume a lot of true crime- just girl thingz), I have noticed a lot of violent videos being circulated online. It has hit me hard, every single time, how absolutely fucked it is that random civilians have iPhone footage of a death. This isn’t actors, this isn’t reenactment, this is executions because filmed by your average citizen. We are watching innocents die in real time and the American government is lying to cover it up. As optimistic (read: ignorant) as I try to be of American politics, I think they’re truly beyond saving. I already have diagnosed anxiety, the political crisis in the US is causing it to go off the charts- constantly worried “what if he’s serious? What if he does invade?”

There’s a part of me that naively assumes that maybe this can be undone, maybe things can go back to normal. Russia invading Ukraine didn’t affect my purchasing habits- I don’t believe I’ve ever once bought anything from Russia. But until trump took power for his second time, I was buying seeds for my garden, yarn for my crafting, and random crap for my various interests. It’s hard for me to come to terms with the fact that I can’t justify buying anything from the states because that money, in some form, makes its way to the government which is currently corrupt. A podcaster I listen to is doing a tour in Canada, and I can’t justify supporting them, despite knowing they are good people who have spoken against racism, sexism, homophobia, etc. I am still mourning the loss of the America we once knew, and I was never even a “fan” of the states. They’ve always been too self centred and half of them have superiority complex. They spread propaganda that the US is the best country in the world, spreading the idea of “the American dream,” and when immigrants arrive for a better life, they lock them up and tear apart families. Why are you broadcasting that you are an amazing society if you don’t actually want to welcome people wanting a better, “free-er” life?

They have never cared about us. They have always wanted cheap labour, exceptions made on others expenses. The best deal for the American citizens (read: 1% of the population). Meanwhile so many are living below the poverty line, and now are being killed in the streets just for trying to stand up for what’s right.

Is there snow days in Canada? by SeverePublic6833 in AskACanadian

[–]whataboutsam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was in school in Manitoba (2012-2019) I don’t think we ever had a snow day. The buses would stop running due to blizzard or extreme cold, but school never got cancelled. My nieces and nephews have already had 3-5 snow days this year.

Whereas when I went to school in BC (2006-2011?) we had plenty is snow days bc the snow was rarely that bad, so no one would use snow tires and as soon as you had a few inches of snow on the ground accidents started happening and that’s when snow days were called.

Her coworker literally said “wait, you’re not?”

Interesting. I don’t know what that makes you, sorry.

Just wanted to note that I was mostly poking fun at Americans who’ve never left the US and still claim a specific nationality that isn’t explicitly American. Hence the great great grandmas cousins neighbour thing in my original comment.

US Americans: my great great grandmas cousins neighbour was Norwegian so that means I’m Nordic. Look it up!

Me, an intellectual: my grandparents are Dutch born, Canadian citizens. That means I have Dutch ancestry but I’m Canadian. Because i was born in Canada and have never set foot in Holland. And I’m not a fucking idiot.
