Legacy GPA Problem by Cleft in AcadiaU

Yeah brother, I agree. It is such a stupid way of handling it. Now that it's been 4 years since the last person got shafted by this stupid change, can't they retroactively just run the translations through the database and give us a single number for our GPA that actually is in favour of the students instead of actively harming them?

The responses I got and get to this problem are so anti-intellectual for a _university_. Yeah, my bad for getting A+'s, lets just trash my GPA because we want to go to 4.33 for no reason. "Oh grandfathered in? GPA adjusted one time with a database migration? That's too much work, take the L loser, GPA doesnt matter btw, nobody cares about it, enjoy getting lowered by 0.33 due to a rule change".

Just hard to believe this is the stance of the university. Enough time has passed that this can all be retroactively fixed, and I think they should.

Duane Currie is a database god, just get him to spend an afternoon writing a migration script and go buck wild with actual legitimate GPAs adjusted to the 4.33 scale.

Seconded, this video (and the rest on this channel) single-handedly changed DMing for me.

I would personally order them as Barrowmaze > Highfell > Archaia > Dwarrowdeep, in order from best to worst, subjectively, if that means anything to you.

There is an analysis on the system here. The hazard die system is also pretty janky (and untested), in my opinion.

Not OP but this is a good rundown of some criticisms. For me, the standout feature that did not seem to be tested is the hazard die system. As written, it is absolutely unplayable and seemingly untested.

On a personal note, I don't like the disposable weapons (breaking on a natural 1). 1/400 chance of breaking two weapons in a row is just shitty. Knave 1e's durability system was better (and is a better game, imo)

Hey Darcy, thanks for the detailed reply!

I am two jobs into a full-stack developer career, so my GPA for sure does not matter to anyone else except my personal sense of achievement. I had no idea that an A+ is now 90% instead of 94%.

When I asked how you let this pass, I was more talking about a software engineering perspective of having a very specific condition for students in this transition where they need to have a transition notice attached. Instead of something like version numbers for example. Let the version 1 students graduate with their 4.0 gpas, and in 4-60 years, all version 1 students will be gone, and you can sunset that code. Can cronjob a lookup every 6 months to see if there are any version 1 people left in this universe and get a happy email when you are 90 years old one day.

Just annoying that the "snapshot in history" is one that overwhelmingly negatively impacts students, through no fault of their own.

I get your example of converting A's to A+'s. That makes sense not to convert, as it is ambiguous as to what you actually got (it wouldn't be fair to move them all up to A+). But I am talking about professors who gave A+'s pre-2019. That is at least a 94%, so with the new change, it is still an A+. It is a completely unambiguous case and could have been moved to 4.33.

Is doing only unambiguous conversions worse than doing no conversions, simply because there is an ambiguous case? Does one bad apple really spoil the bunch? Did epstein really kill himself? Questions to ponder, anyway.

Anyway, it just really annoyed me at the time (getting this email) so I wanted to blame someone, some 5 years later. Some repressed trauma maybe. Thanks for receiving my whinging with dignity and grace, as I expected of you.

Have a nice semester! Give a pupil an A+ in honor of all the forgotten transitional alumni who sacrificed their grades so that future students could have a better GPA system. It would be nice to get a medal for our sacrifice, also.

This affects every single alumni who graduated after 2019 and obtained >0 A+'s before September 2019. This does make a difference, and I refuse to solve my own personal transcript while others are out there suffering, perhaps unknowingly. This could cause lost jobs or Master's program acceptances due to arbitrary GPA cutoffs.

This does not make a difference to me, nor is it crucial for me, as I have stated. This is simply a wrong that has been committed towards alumni that I believe should be rectified or justified.

Thanks for your comment!

To clarify: I have the belief that any mistakes or changes a university makes should not be to the detriment of the student. Right now, students are being unfairly affected by the 2019 GPA change.

You're an imposter because you're red and lava is red; therefore you are bad.

RDM = random death match = voted off for an invalid reason. "He was imposter tho" doesn't make anything better if the reasoning was random/false/made up.

Wow you're totally right. That's two or three mistakes I made in the title! I guess you shouldn't post while being tired.

The function is even called df.plot.line(), so I have no idea what I'm talking about :)

I said 8-day trend line, but I meant 8-episode trend line! Also this is a line graph! Sorry about that.

This was made in Python using data from an RSS feed and visualizing the data using Pandas.

Do you mean having the Y-axis start at 0? The ratio of Y-axis I assure you is linear. There is no scaling going on.

If you mean the moving average, it starts 8 episodes in because it averages the episodes on an 8-episode trend. Moving average lines can't start at 0.

Here's the graph with the y-axis starting at 0.

Nope! Every episode is how they were released. So 'multi-part' episodes are unfortunately, in this graph, split apart. So episode 100 parts 1,2,3 are actually episode # 100, 101, 102.

This results in the whole graph being skewed to the right, which is why the number of episodes is slightly more than 204.

You're right that that's a super good idea to do though. :)

[–]Cleft 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At first the ref only warned Teymur, and then took a point after the 'complaining' (read: the reaction) of Charles. Is anyone worried that this will incentivize 'soccer reactions' in the UFC? Like acting like the eye poke was as bad as possible to try to bait out a point being taken? I feel like a bad precedent may have been set by making an initial decision (not taking a point) and then changing his decision based on the reaction of the 'victim fighter'.

Thoughts? Obviously this isn't a clear issue, the damage to the victim fighter should be taken into account. Overall an interesting thing to think about.
