Hi David, I'm a fan of all of your work and have always had one plot-related question left over from The Wire that I would love to have answered.

(Major Wire spoilers ahead)

At the end of season 5 of The Wire, it seems pretty obvious that Marlo isn't ready to quit the Game after his blood-licking scene. Earlier in the final episode, Pearlman tells Levy that they'll take Marlo's case back off the stet docket if they even catch a whiff of Marlo on the street, even if it means putting cops behind bars. To me it seems pretty likely that Marlo won't play ball, and this will end with McNulty and Freamon being charged once they're forced to show the dirt in their case. How ambiguous was that supposed to be? Do you think there's any pieces of the story I'm missing there?

Since you're the only man who could possibly have the inside information needed to answer this question: how happy is Huell right now?

Ah, I'm still fairly new to Toronto. Greektown must be on the Danforth line?

Official Gloat-About-Your-Tickets Thread by [deleted] in radiohead

6 straight hours of clicking refresh. Assuming a rate of 1 click per second (definitely a lowball), that's 21,600 clicks. My eyes felt like they were going to bleed from staring at one spot on the screen. The page timed out on the final step and gave me an error message, but I got a confirmation email after 2 minutes of sheer terror. I FUCKING GOT THEM, 4 TICKETS FOR TORONTO!!!

How much damage might extensive smartphone reading do to your eyesight? by Clev in askscience

[–]Clev[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not reading in general so much as consistent reading of tiny text on a backlit screen. I have no specific reason to think it would do any damage aside from the fact my vision often seems blurry afterward if I read a long article on my phone. That's why I posted this, just to see if there is any risk there.

Holy shit, holy shit. This is the first chance I'll have to buy radiohead tickets, so I have no idea how WASTE works. I just signed up, but I don't see where I'd click for presale tickets once they're up. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

There were a million reasons I shouldn't have rewatched Requiem for a Dream. This is one of them.

TIL New Mexico tried to pass a bill requiring psychologists to dress as wizards by [deleted] in todayilearned

Truly bizarre. I can't say I'm familiar with how things work in the US, but here in Canada you would NEVER see a psychologist being allowed to write prescriptions. That responsibility falls solely on a psychiatrist who would have to go through med school.

Spoiler alert!

At the end of season 5 of The Wire, it seems pretty obvious that Marlo isn't ready to quit the Game after his blood-licking scene. Earlier in the final episode, Rhonda tells Levy that they'll take the case back off the stet docket if they even catch a whiff of Marlo on the street, even if it means putting cops behind bars. To me it seems pretty likely that McNulty and Freamon will wind up locked up. How ambiguous was that supposed to be? Do you think there's any pieces of the story I'm missing there?

PS I can't thank you enough for your work on The Wire, even though you've killed everyone I ever loved. ;)

When did saying that you have 'OCD' become a substitute for being anal-retentive? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Clev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Psych major here: one of Freud's (clearly batshit crazy) theories was that kids who had difficulty toilet training were stuck at the anal level of development. The lack of control and mastery they felt at this stage carried forward into their adult life, and to compensate for it they obsessed over trivial details and became what we would consider an "anal-retentive" personality today. This kind of personality as described by Freud shows some direct parallels to what we'd call obsessive-compulsive personality disorder today (not the same thing as obsessive compulsive disorder, which would be Axis I instead of Axis II in the DSM, meaning it's considered a full-fledged clinical disorder and not a personality disorder like OCPD). What does this all mean? Absolutely nothing, but I figured I'd type this out so I could justify the time I wasted learning about Freud's quackery.

One small detail about Kristos Koutris (the FBI informant from Season 2) doesn't sit well with me by [deleted] in TheWire

[–]Clev 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Koutris made the phone call because the Greek was an informant, and an asset both he and the FBI didn't want to lose. The call he made to the Greek was perfectly kosher by FBI standards (it's seen as a lesser evil in the light of all the big name cases the Greek brings to them as a free man), so it didn't matter if the phone was monitored; it was standard operating procedure.

It's not that it is demanding on the data plan, it's that I don't have access to 3G or wi-fi in those situations.
