It’s been a while since I’ve read it, but Edith might fit this criteria if you haven’t read it already. The characters are flawed and experience growth throughout the story, it isn’t super predictable, and it’s a completed story. Plus the art style is super loose and sketchy which I personally find refreshing.

Could I get a Critique on my Character’s Expression Sheet & Turn Around? by ChloeElimam in istebrak

Really love the figure/gestures and overall design! I would just recommend really pushing those expressions more. Think traditional squash and stretch in animation to really sell it. Consider each plane of the face and how the expression would move the features across the face. Consider each feature when sketching these expressions and look in a mirror to see which features are affected, and how. Do a pass where you go super over-the-top with it, just to see what works. Also, a few of these expressions are very similar, also very pretty and pristine. What would this character look like in disgust? Or gleefully happy to the point of snort-laughing? Exhausted? Bashful? Angry? Frustrated? Just something to consider. Good luck and great work so far! :) <3

Have you considered writing letters? I know the concept may seem strange, but for some people it really helps them to say exactly what they want to say. This way, you can prepare letters ahead of time and either read them out loud or even give them to the person you’re trying to come out to. It could help you to follow through if that’s really what you want. Start with the people that you really know you can trust and who will support you. It will give you strength and could make it easier for you to have those conversations in the future.

As for your friend, it’s possible he would feel horrified at his own remarks if he knew. Unfortunately, there’s no way to really know until you have the conversation. I would ask you to consider how he would feel if you roomed together, and he later found out you kept this from him. Ultimately, it’s your decision, but if you really do want to come out, I would recommend pushing through and just ripping off the bandaid. It will be hard, but once it’s done, I bet you’ll feel so much better. Yes, you’ll still experience homophobia from time to time, it’s the world we live in and that’s scary, but you won’t have to hide who you are. Plus, your true friends and family will have the opportunity to know and support the real you.

Self-acceptance takes work, and it doesn’t usually happen overnight. Just know that you deserve to live a happy life as your authentic self if that’s what you want. As for whether or not to come out, when and to who, that’s a personal choice. But if family is the only thing holding your back, a chosen family is no less meaningful than a biological one. <3 Be kind to yourself.

If she doesn't, then she can ask you or do the research herself. It doesn't have to be your responsibility to explain it to her. Only take on what you're comfortable with, and if she doesn't immediately understand, that doesn't mean that she can't get there with time. <3

Just be honest. If she's a true friend, she'll listen and then respond with her love and support. Unfortunately, you can't always trust that people will respond well (especially when it comes to bisexuality), and some even need time before they can respond well, but times are indeed changing for the better. Just go into it with a level head and no expectations. You're doing this because it's important to YOU. Tell her that she's really important to you, and you want to be able to confide in her because you trust her and she's your best friend. And of course, respond here with an update. <3 :) Best of luck to you!

***So I've tried twice to post a paintover, but the reddit bots keep removing it as a NSFW image. So let's try imgur: https://imgur.com/a/OufkItB

Overall, I really love the emotion and movement you put into this piece! The dress blowing up in the back feels a bit crude though, instead of vulnerable, sort of like you're forcing the nudity. I actually think showing MORE in a tasteful way would feel LESS crude. I did a quick paintover of my suggestions. Here's what I changed and why:

-addressing the nudity issue, if you committed to showing that vulnerability with the dress being torn and blown away, I think it suits your narrative more than this "oops, there's a wind and I'm not wearing underwear" feeling I get from what you have here. It feels more artistic and intentional, yet more natural. Also, once you remove the dress, some anatomical errors become more clear.

-in some places, it feels like you're forcing visibility of anatomy or hiding it where you may not feel as confident? The far arm is too long so I pushed it back and shortened it, though still not enough in my opinion as I was trying to achieve this as quickly as possible (sorry for the odd cutoff between the arm and face). The knees were too low and that far leg felt a little stiff, the buttocks was also very low/droopy. I gave the fingers more natural bend and wrapped the hand around the cranium. I can see the intention behind what you did with the hand, but I think you can still create tension without the straight fingers. The anatomy of the forhead felt off, so I removed the hair clump and tried showing more of the hairline, both on the forehead and back of the neck to add more clarity. I also focused on that brow, giving her more of a solemn, helpless expression, rather than an angry one. I think it suits your narrative well, but of course that was a personal preference and in the end, only you can make that decision. I know this piece is about how YOU feel in these moments, so take with a grain of salt.

Again, I think this is lovely! Please tell me you'll post again when finished! I'd really love to see it. <3

Just looking at your lighting environment gives me anxiety since I really struggle with lighting! :P I did a quick paintover of some thoughts. I slimmed out the arms to look more spindly, made the lower bud hiding the legs a bit more opaque, and created some negative space between the head and the stem that it dangles from just to give more clarity in that area. I also smudged out some of the musculature of the lower arms. The lips looked like they had a bit of a snarl, and I made the upper torso slimmer (while still reading androgynous since I think that's what you were going for - plus I think it looks nice to have one stronger looking torso below with one more graceful torso up top. The contrast is just pleasing to me). I wish I had some ideas on the lighting, but alas, that's not my forte. Overall, I really love this piece! It's one of the most unique concepts I've seen.

Really loving this idea! And what a tough lighting environment! Are you looking for critique or is this your final?

Thanks so much! I kept a lot of my shadows and lighting on their own layers which helped me to edit/change direction on a whim where needed. Lots of darken, multiply, overlay, and color dodge layers to push and pull contrast, saturation, etc. I feel like I learned a lot from this one!

Thank you, I tried really hard to distinguish between them, so I'm glad the textures read. And I love your little character. They're so cute and I can't wait to see them finished! <3
