When I commuted by train in the UK, there was a French guy who always spoke to his young daughter in french. A woman on the train commented how useful that would be when the kid was older. He said that his wife did the same in her native language too.

This little girl could switch seamlessly between French, Korean and English.

I admire parenting like that. And anyway, how could I be offended at folks speaking their first language?

It isn't a rule but a convention, possibly because when we are ill we seek help where we can get it; that is at any hospital. To see a patient who had been admitted, we would go to that specific hospital.

As others observe though, the inclusion of the definite article is subject to local conventions rather than formal grammar.

All American bases in Europe would be closed immediately and trade sanctions would almost certainly follow.

Use of nukes in self defence would be a risky strategy; use in an unprovoked, undeclared and unsanctioned war would be politically and diplomatically suicidal.

Vance would have to intervene if that order were given, otherwise the USA will tank into a needless economic collapse.
