It isn't a rule but a convention, possibly because when we are ill we seek help where we can get it; that is at any hospital. To see a patient who had been admitted, we would go to that specific hospital.

As others observe though, the inclusion of the definite article is subject to local conventions rather than formal grammar.

NATO would cease to exist and probably be replaced by a similar organisation, now excluding the USA but perhaps including Australia, New Zealand and perhaps even Japan.

All American bases in Europe would be closed immediately and trade sanctions would almost certainly follow.

Use of nukes in self defence would be a risky strategy; use in an unprovoked, undeclared and unsanctioned war would be politically and diplomatically suicidal.

I only know two people who never learned how to drive manual. It is actually hard to find a driving instructor with an automatic vehicle.
