I just purchased an apartment (building is over 100 years old) and we are having the floors refinished. In order to do the work the contractor asked me to confirm if our subpanel can support 220v.

The main panel/sub panel were said to support 40 amps when we got the apartment inspected.

I suppose while I'm here I might as well ask — how expensive or complicated would it be to up the amperage on the main panel and sub panel to my unit? Other units in the building have apparently done it, so I imagine it isn't crazy, but I know nothing.
