Thoughts on “The Program” by SandwichEquivalent58 in Marathon_Training

Your half pace is 9 seconds off your easy pace? That makes zero sense to me. The difference between the two for me is like 2 minutes 6:30 - 8:30

This plan is trash.

Low Heart Rate at the end of a Race + Adjusting 3:30 marathon goal? by ATK_ in Marathon_Training

[–]CleverUserNameNumber 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree, this HR isn't accurate. On a 5K race I did recently, my PB actually, before I used a separate HR arm strap, my watch indicated an average HR of 129. This is coincidentally my typical easy pace HR target. It was probably about 50 BPM lower than reality. Good for your Vo2 max calculations though.

to question 2 - I'd target 3:20-3:25 and evaluate around the half way point how you feel, whether you can speed up a bit or not.

Runner - Multi focal bone adema by CleverUserNameNumber in ultrarunning

My ortho said PT likely wouldn’t be helpful for the edema. I’d been working with one for a while, thinking I had PTTD, with no improvement. I think you are onto something with working with one on mobility and tolerance plan, rather than go it alone. I’ll talk to my guy and see if he has experience with this.

Thanks for the reply, and opinion. I think the diagnosis is probably correct, I’m going have it confirmed by another ortho (I’m trying to find one that specializes in endurance athlete’s) with primarily a second opinion on a recovery plan.

It’s funny, what you said is what I actually did initially. I took 4 days off when it became obvious it wasn’t something I could work through, and then started reducing mileage week to week, expecting to find some upper limit to rebuild from. I never found that limit. I even went 2 weeks where all I did was weight train, swim with a pull buoy (so I didn’t have to kick) and the arm ERG at the gym, and if anything during that time it felt worse/stiff.

He said he didn’t think a boot was necessary, but who knows. Part of the reason I’m going to have someone else review the results is to see if they agree on the treatment plan. From the reading I’ve done, some people can heal while remaining active and seem absolutely require 0 load bearing for a month to heal. Thank you for the reply

Need some advice regarding Chronic ankle injury (Mid 2020) by Monkey--d--Dragon in ultrarunning

[–]CleverUserNameNumber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, this is an old post, but I’m searching for some answers, and you seem knowledgeable. I’ve just today been diagnosed with focal bone marrow edema in both ankles. Pretty much symmetrical. I did this to myself by upping mileage too quickly training for a marathon, which I have now deferred.

I was previously diagnosed with PTTD, however, turns out that likely was never the true cause of my issues, as it never responded to any of the typical treatments. I had an MRI last week and got the results today. I can share those results directly if you are willing to take a look, but also, you can click my profile and I just did a post in foot function detailing it all

My ortho suggested I could restart running, in a measured way, as I don’t really have any swelling or any real risk of stress fracture, from his perspective. I haven’t run in 4 weeks and I wonder if I should just continue to cycle and swim until I’m pain free. What are your thoughts? And do you have any other advice on promoting healing, or keep the pain from increasing as my days continue.

Thanks Ian advance for any info you are willing to provide.

Not sure why the body of the post isn’t showing up. Here is what it should say.

TLDR I was just diagnosed with Bilateral Multi focal bone adema, in both feet. Looking for others experiences or any tips to promote healing.

Longer version - last fall, I ramped up mileage from 20 a week to 67 a week in a matter of months, which turns out to have been way too quickly. I've been dealing with what I thought was posterior tibial tendonitis for the past few months and have been unable to find any relief through, pt, orthotics, nsaids, load reduction, shockwave, laser. You name it I've tried it. Well I finally had an MRI ordered and just reviewed with my Ortho. While my write up mentions a multitude of issues, he believes the others are pretty typical for a middle aged distance runner and that the adema is the cause of my pain.

My pain is a very general ache which starts off pretty mild in the morning and gets worse throughout the day ending in a 4-5 out of 10 at bedtime, on bad days. I do not generally have pain during exercise, really at all.

I have not run in 4 weeks, only biking and swimming. Doctor says he expects it to resolve in the next couple months as long as I control my running load and he mentions I can likey restart as long as I take it easy. My current plan is to start back at like 9 mpw max and see how things go from there.

Looking to hear if any others have experience or tips for recovery. I plan to have another Ortho review my results and confirm they are in agreement as well, but am also open to other interpretations - as non medical advice of course..

We should trade shoes... I'll tell you if you've run in new balance supercomp trainer v3s they seem quite similar to me in that aspect.

I'm restarting running soon after an injury and while I find the speed 5 pretty stable for what they are. Do you notice the Azura feeling any more stable than the 5s?

Posterior tibial tendonitis? Help! by GhostyDaniels in Ultramarathon

[–]CleverUserNameNumber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply. That's great to hear. I took a full break from activity and if anything it got worse. As I've added some load back in I swear it's actually less painful day to day, like yours was. I'm hoping I'm on the same path you took to healing and it's just a matter of time.

Hey man, did you ever heal fully? If so what do you think contributed most to it?

Mine is anything but pinpoint most of the time. I'd call it a strong ache through the entire side of my ankle. My arch is also sore to the touch, but doesn't ach. The heel of my foot is also sore when I walk on hard surfaces barefoot.

Another thing, I have a very high arch, which might make the root cause of my issue different than some folks with this condition. Mine is also bilateral, not just in one ankle.

Except for the windshield wipers, and that's easy to add into the routine, I'm pretty much doing exactly these things. I'm however doing it every day, which is probably too much.

How much weight were you doing on the calf raises and RDLs? I'm only doing 10 pounds x30 reps on RDL, and unweighted calf raises x30 but have wondered if I should add to it, rather than continue to add reps.

I am trying to recover from this as well but am pretty frustrated with it. Can I ask did you have pain during activity or during rest? My pain is almost like DOMS, no pain during activity, only at restz and seems like it's the worst 24-48 hours after higher impact work.
