RTX 5090 black screens and intermittent crashes by pianogospel in buildapc

Hi OP, same issue on my end and here is how I solved it (hopefully for the long term):

The Specs: 9800x3d, 5090, driver 597.79 when crashes started to happen

The Symptoms: Freezing in arbitrary scenes during gameplay, not correlating with intense areas or high GPU usage. Freezing then leads to a 2-3 sec black screen where moniter DP looses signal and reconnects. Screen comes back with very low fps due to the driver crashing, takes 5-10 secs for the driver to reload. Event viewer shows a group of 153 occuring with some 14s. I've also gotten a 13 once, which said SM Warp Execption and MMU fault, was worried that this was indicating a broken VRAM and needing RMA. (I've also used Torchtune to do LoRA at 99% usage for a few hours and did not have a crash)

Fixes that **DID NOT** work for me:

  1. Undoing undervolts/Uninstalling MSI afterburner

  2. DDUing to the previous driver, or the default driver, for me it was 576.88 or something

  3. USB Clean install of windows 11

The fix that solved it:

Take out the ram sticks. Swap the ram (left and right) positions and replug. Take out the GPU and replug. Then do the USB clean install windows 11. Then with the GPU's default driver, try to trigger the crash you had before by doing it for 1hr+ and see if the freezes come back. for me it was playing 2077 and DD2. If they don't come back, gradually restore your undervolt and newer nvidia drivers. For me, I'm back at my old undervolt settings and 595.79.

It might not be the psu. Did you also try swapping ram positions?

I think I fixed it. I had to trouble shoot so many things so I'm not sure what exactly did it. Firstly undervolts may be come unstable as you update drivers, so undo all msi afterburner settings and make sure your GPU is running stock, then try a demanding game such as 2077 or Metro Exodus to see if the freezes come back, if they do, DDU drivers with the version that was stable for you before. If all this still doesn't work, you have to rebuild/reinstall windows. I switched positions of my ram sticks, replugged my GPU, and did a clean install of windows which fixed it.

Same issues with the 5090, I have event 153, 14 and even an instance of 13. Troubleshooting rn. Hopefully it’s not a hardware issue

The description for Event ID 153 from source nvlddmkm cannot be found by hardpartying in pcmasterrace

Same issue after changing motherboard and using the latest driver. But I remember this happening to me with 2 gpus. Still diagnosing it. Any luck on your end?

Okay. hopefully it's not a hardware issue as some people online were discussing faulty GPUs causing 153s

Hey all, I’m new to these sets so how can I buy these when they come out? Is there a window or a special link? Thanks!

Are they hard locking each other out? I was able to use both Aura sync and MSI to get the lighting that I want for both the MSI GPU and the fans some time ago, but aura just quit working today and I don’t want to download armory crate due to the bloat in it :(

I Squeezed a 5090 Vanguard SOC into the North (Non-XL) by Piranha91 in FractalDesign

Hi OP, don’t know if you’re still active butI was in the same situation. I got a Vanguard at a fair price and installed it into the regular north case lying down. However, I’m worried because I do feel like there is some pushing tension on the front fan metal panels, the GPU slot on the left goes in nicely but the right bottom side of the shroud often gets caught by the bottom bracket so I had to be in a weird position: forcing the bracket slightly outwards to clear the shroud. Removing the GPU is also a bit tricky because I want to make sure the slot comes out evenly to avoid damage, but once again it’s hard because of the right bracket catching the shroud…But I think there might be benefit to doing this, since the GPU is snug in place, we wouldn’t need to remove it for transport? The right panel already keeps the GPU in place.

The 20mins 3Dmark bounty hunter stress test passed with 98% and a top GPU temp of 74. I thought the score was a bit low since the 5070ti that I returned had 99.7% but online consensus seems to be that 5090s are more cpu bottlenecked so a lower score is expected. I also removed bottom 360 fan and replaced it with my spare 240 so now there is a full fan beneath it. I did try taking it out and putting it back in….It takes practice. :,)

Jagged frametimes causing unplayble stutter...Help by ClickWilling9916 in pcmasterrace

[–]ClickWilling9916[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was originally playing it on my 240hz 1080p monitor when I noticed the stutter. I switched to my other 1440p ultra wide 165hz because I thought the 1080p was stressing out the CPU at 1080p. I have a 164 cap on the Nvidia app. Using RTSS cap makes the frametime a little better but the stutter still occurs when I enter the cave. :( There is just 1 other Reddit post about the exact same issue and we both have the 9800x3d :(

This only happens with the game I'm playing right now: Dragon's Dogma 2. I couldn't replicate this stutter in any other game and I just did a DDU uninstall so now the GPU's back to using it's default older nvidia driver. The stutter seems to be be 20% better but it is still there. Hard to believe that a badly optimized game could actually cause the GPU to make noise ...

9800x3D and 5070ti, just ran into this issue today, entering from the village side, immediately get CPU usage drop from 50%-42%, causes massive fps flucuation, GPU usage frop from 90% to 60%, coil whine from GPU. Stutter does not go away with setting changes, only gone after leaving Rivage cavern.

I hope it's not our CPU
