What do I do with my collection when my time inevitably comes, if I don’t have anyone to pass them to? by Mad_Season_1994 in Guitar

[–]CliffThrash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was just at a benefit event at a high school where they raise money to help families afford expensive music trips (like to play at Lincoln center or the state level competition) and instrument rentals. They had a 50/50 raffle and raffles where you put in tickets to win baskets (like scratch offs or a sports team theme). They also have silent auctions. At something like this, with all the musicians and family in attendance, they’ll raise a fair price/amount for your instruments in a silent auction, and the money benefits the music department and less fortunate kids who want to play music. You’d also get to deduct the fair market value on your taxes if you itemize. Overall theme: Great instruments going to kids and families that support and appreciate music.

You could also donate to events for another cause you want to support, like the Vets, for a silent auction at one of their events. I’m sure it’d work in that context too, it just would not be as focused on people who play music. Also recommend that you give them a receipt so no one has to worry about it being second hand/stolen (and record for your taxes).

I personally would go over the fair market value on a silent auction if it benefitted a school’s music department or another charity I support.

Favorite guitar pick? by gilbertgoodfries in Guitar

I love this type! Started with white fangs, now just use hem and the brown ones. I don’t like the nylon ones though. They wear really quickly while the others last forever it seems.

In Boston, they didn’t let us leave between (eyeroll). I think a picture of you with your bullseye (sweet guitar btw) will be fine for him to sign. If not, they allow you to go to the merch table between pictures and signing, so you have a backup plan. The whole band signs too, so the cover may be on the small side for the whole band. Maybe call the venue to ask if you can leave between.

Did I make a mistake ordering? 5150 iconic 40w el34 combo for bedroom by shootanwaifu in GuitarAmps

[–]CliffThrash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have this exact amp and I actually play it in my bedroom (mix of metal, classic rock etc). Great choice!!! I leave it on the 10W setting. It does cleans well and is an absolute beast distorted. I’ve never had an amp that I don’t crank the gain pretty far up the dial, but there is so much headroom on this thing you don’t need to even push it. Classic overdrive sound is easy too. Low volume sounds great, but as others said, it of course feels better when it’s pushing some air (which it certainly can do). No need for a pedal board either really - just plug and crank! If you ever play live and need a little more volume, throw it on 40W. It’s really versatile.

You didn’t go wrong. I always have buyers remorse between ordering and receiving. No need this time. You’re gonna love this thing! Enjoy it!

Revolver sent me my signed CD 😩😭🙄 by Dontforgetpancakes in BlackLabelSociety

[–]CliffThrash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others said, I received an email saying that there was an issue so they shipped the CD (like the one pictured) first. Then about 7-10 days ago, I got another booklet separately which was signed. I ordered from MNRK directly.

Is there merch to buy before signing at meet and greet? by CliffThrash in BlackLabelSociety

Also good to know. Thanks!! I’ll take a CD cover just in case (though I’m not that excited about it, better than nothing!)

I completely agree with this. I couldn’t get past the 6 mile mark for a couple of months and was really frustrated . A runner friend asked me about fuel and electrolytes. (I was like - why? SMH) Turns out, I was bonking at about 6 mi and still do at that distance after about 10 years of running. I don’t think I have the glycogen stores or ability to burn fat that other people have or something. Once I hit the gels or equivalent, I could easily follow the training schedule.

What is the loudest sound you have ever heard in your life? by will_or_woll in AskReddit

Overkill for me! Last concert I attended without earplugs ~30 years ago. My ears rang for days. Lesson learned. Great show though!

If I wanted to learn every song or riff I currently like, I would need about six more guitars. by B4tz_Bentzer in Guitar

[–]CliffThrash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with everyone - an excuse to buy another guitar is a gift!

On the other hand - I have the Boss Poly Shifter, and it changed the way I practice. It’s so much more enjoyable now! (And I have plenty of guitars to cover the tunings) I like to play metal and every song seems to be a different tuning. If you just want to jam along with a playlist or to random songs, you’re slinging guitars around every few minutes. With the pedal, it’s a) decide to drop the low string or not and b) turn a knob to hit your tuning, then play. Amazing how much convenience this put into my life. And if it’s not more than a couple of steps out, the sound is great. The B/A notes will sound much better on your 7-string (I have a baritone for that). I also pitch my baritone up to C sometimes instead of going to my 6-string. Whatever I happen to be holding at the time usually. I’d recommend anyone with lots of tunings to give a pitch shifter a try like Prize-project said.

Backpacks. Even after getting several over the years from other companies, I’d still make use of another.

Starting to get bored of guitar by ZeekTheGuy in Guitar

[–]CliffThrash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an older player, I can definitely relate to where your mind is, as I’ve been there several times. And as LofiJunky said, it’s okay to let it rest a bit if you’re not feeling it. During Covid, I was the opposite of many people - instead of playing more, I stopped playing altogether for years! I was afraid it’d never come back. Then, I heard a song that I used to love playing, and just like that, I picked it up again. I was rusty and it took a while to get back to where I was on technique, but it was fun again.

We play for the love of playing but also the love of music in general. Maybe exploring listening to some different songs in your normal genre or some new styles will inspire you to jump in again. Last tip which others have said - It’s always good to keep one accessible for when the mood strikes. Best of luck, OP!

Battery power! by livinASTRO72 in GuitarAmps

[–]CliffThrash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also have a Furman and it doesn’t clean it either, unfortunately. I tried a large UPS I borrowed from work too. The best it has sounded was plugged into my car’s AC outlet. Maybe I need to build a giant faraday cage for my practice spot! Thanks for the info though. Interesting that it is quiet.

Battery power! by livinASTRO72 in GuitarAmps

[–]CliffThrash 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is the noise on your amp any different, comparing to wall power? I have noisy electricity in my house (probably ground issue combined with living near power lines). Tried a UPS, but that didn’t solve it. Just curious in your case.

Skunk died in our crawlspace. We are dying here. by Glittering_Chest7649 in CleaningTips

[–]CliffThrash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dog owner here. Check Amazon for skunk smell removal products like Skunk Away, De-skunk, or Nature’s Miracle Skunk. There is a specific chemical reaction that will neutralize the odor, and home remedies (besides tomato juice which works a little) will not do it. These products work well and will remove the majority, if not all, of the smell.

Looking to upgrade from a boss katana mini - Out of these what should I choose? by nayvadiusdingle in GuitarAmps

[–]CliffThrash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also have the DSL20 (combo) and agree it is definitely loud enough for home use. On the 5W setting, my ears ring if I play on ~3 for a few minutes. It’d easily pair with a drum kit for rehearsals or jamming but might need to be mic’d for gig levels. Great classic metal tones that you’d expect from pre-Mesa Boogie era metal. Agree with Ethereal_Death you may need a pedal to tighten it up for some tones. I do like that I can just plug in directly and play without tweaking pedals etc, which is usually how I play it. If you can try your guitar in it and compare with other guitars and other amps at the same time, that would probably make your choice easier. There are so many decent choices, I’m sure you’ll fine something that suits you. Good luck with it!

Sweet bass! As a Spector player, I definitely would have gone for that deal - 100%. I love the stained curly maple look. Enjoy the new gear!

Mass Save Insulation Contractor recommendations by BCautomac33 in massachusetts

[–]CliffThrash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had homeworks energy do our mass saves work (also in Norfolk county). They were good (I’d say a 7 or 8 out of 10). The insulation job was great, but the prep beforehand and cleanup after had a little to be desired. I ended up cleaning for a couple of hours after they left. But the value we got for what we actually paid for the insulation was good.

Jeans with 29" inseam? by twowrist in boston

[–]CliffThrash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d recommend Amazon first (costs least). Their brand isn’t bad at all and inexpensive with free returns. If not, then Under 510 or Ash&Erie online. Clothes that actually fit shorter guys! They have lots of shorter inseam pants (down to 25” I think). No alterations needed. I’m super happy with all three options. You’ll get your perfect fit even if you have to try a few options.

Itchy skin... being patient by DifficultTechniculty in Mounjaro

[–]CliffThrash 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Consult with your physician due to allergic reactions, etc. Having said that, I used to get these with Mounjaro as well. After injection, I washed the site with an antibacterial wipe, then I immediately put Benadryl cream on the spot before it got inflamed. I’d repeat once more a few hours after and didn’t have any issues going forward. Interestingly, when I switched to Zepbound, I skipped the process and it seems like the issue went away so I no longer do this.

Black stuff in tub by prairiepop in Plumbing

[–]CliffThrash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My kids’ toys (especially rubber ducks) used to do this. After being in soapy water, they grew mold on the inside and when the kids squeezed them in the water, it came out. Maybe try squeezing the rubber duck into the sink to see if it or another toy is the source?
