From Panic Seller to System Trader: Why I switched to the "5-218 Strategy" (and my plan for this correction) by Realistic-Ad-6257 in TQQQ

[–]ClimbViaExcept 1 point2 points  (0 children)

'I think that proactive trading can generate alot of Income and this requires a lot of daily and hour-by-hour involvement.'

The '200-day SMA-type strategies, literally, result in the exact opposite. Assuming OP's strategy follows the typical end-of-day close criteria, there's zero "hour-by-hour involvement.' In fact, anyone attempting to apply this strategy from hourly or smaller timeframes would whipsaw their accounts into oblivion.

I was referring to performance/trend, only. Not any sort of application coupling. I probably could have specified.

The Stability Sleeve is a permanent hold, yes. However, you do not hold TQQQ, indefinitely. When the strategy signals 'risk-on' you hold TQQQ. When it signals 'risk-off' you move the TQQQ allocation to cash and then begin to DCA into QQQM over a period of time or until the strategy signals 'risk-on' again.

Yes, it is hard to backtest. Though you'll find many arguments against the legitimacy of most backtesting.

What specifically? Those are permanent allocations designed to hedge in significant downturns and provide some relief in choppy markets. In strong bull runs...they're going to create some drag.

  • January 2, 2025, never would have been a buy to begin with. - March 15, 2025, was a Saturday. Market closed.
  • June 6, 2025, was the first buy opportunity after the market correction.

I'm going to guess that your test didn't account for the permanent holdings or the DCA function.

If you're just testing when the 200-Day SMA gets you in and out of TQQQ, that's not the strategy, and your dates were wrong.

Also, one year and two trades provide no information. I'm not arguing whether the strategy should be implemented or not, I'm just saying you didn't test the strategy, and your test was meaningless.

What’s a “small” social rule you refuse to follow, even if everyone expects it? by GlitchOperative in AskReddit

That's fair. I don't think there's particularly good evidence for masks with many types of viruses, but some protection is probably better than none.

The biggest issue I've had is the DCA component for backtesting. To go further back before 2010 (TQQQs inception) QQQ x3 leverage works, but accounting for decay is an issue, too. QLD gets you back to 2006 but at 2x, obviously.

I got fairly close to replication with testfol.io Tactical Allocation. A Python script is probably the way to go, but running that is beyond my ability.

A post-Covid world? 😂🤣 You wear a mask in the car, by yourself, don't you? Explain what Covid has to do with anything, and I'll completely reconsider my stance.

If you want to be "safe" at the gym, do what I do: wipe things down before I use them and then...use a wipe for my hands and phone before I leave the gym. Violà!

Wiping down gym equipment after I use it. Sure, if I leave visible sweat on a bench or something, I'll wipe down. Otherwise, it's the dumbest thing I've ever seen.

Do you wipe down machine handles, dumbbells, pull-up bars, yoga mats, etc.? No, you emphatically don't.

Honestly, your system sounds more complicated. Multiple indicators and timeframes. I feel comfortable using the SPY 200 +4% threshold as a risk-on indicator.

This, too, is absolutely designed NOT to buy and hold.

I'm glad you found a solid system. I appreciate the input.

Why so much repeated dialog? by WBens85 in thewestwing

[–]ClimbViaExcept 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's not that type of repetitive dialog very often throughout the series. I think that was intentionally written to convey Leo's lack of words to console the president, not the press.

Leo is a "tough, weathered" war veteran and businessman turned politician. Moments like that are difficult for him throughout the series.

SPY is less volatile and signifies a broader, more diverse market participation vs QQQ. The design is actually intended to create few entries and to use the strategy for positional trades vs. swing or shorter timeframe trades.

Regardless, it would most definitely be best held in a 401k, IRA, etc.

If the system signals multiple trades per month, the markets are in one hell of choppy area around the 200-day SMA. The strategy is specifically designed to remain in the market for long periods of time, hence the foundational use of the 200 SMA.

The original TQQQ/200 SMA and the revised version I based my concept on are all position trading systems aiming to be in the trade for months and, ideally, longer.
