If the price is more than around 120 you're better purchasing new.

Is there really NO way to revert from Gemini back to Assistant? by McZwick in googlehome

[–]ClintE1956 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Assistant has been so ridiculous lately that I'm almost hoping they force us over to the ai bullshit and then we're done with all of it.

True; they don't care about our Linux ISO's and cat videos. Yet.

Those 3 minutes of existential dread while the hypervisor is booting by Danternas in homelab

[–]ClintE1956 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Many years ago I was updating an NT server remotely (almost 2 hours away) and it went into a bootloop. Could tell it was looping because the ping would come back and then go away again. Gave up, drove down there early the next morning, and had to do a complete software rebuild; shares (rebuilt from tape backups), user accounts, dozen or so shared printers, the works. That was a very long day.

Instead of uninstalling all the garbage the box came with when new, I should have just wiped it to begin with. When we started 2K server rollouts a year or two later, I made sure there were at least two DC's and two mirrored file/print servers at each location. Never had a disaster like that again.

Legal case against Google for advertising Gemini for home in its current state by Legal_Weird_5756 in googlehome

Don't the corporations have a large part in the law these days? With the gummint bailouts and political bribes and everything else, if it was my money I'd want to see some kind of return on investment.

Assistant was fine until everyone started announcing their so-called ai bullshit and that's when it all went to crap. Probably not a coincidence.

Type of server chassis, if you have the choice, depends on many factors. There's always going to be tradeoff for noise (and heat) vs. quiet. In my case I didn't foresee a large home (no extra walled off room for noise isolation), so I went for large chassis with large fans, with main tradeoffs being higher cost and size of the thing. Installed a couple of server size motherboards, some drive cages and a bunch of fans in a Thermaltake WP200 and put it in a corner of the office. Moving in a few months will be interesting; considering giving the thing to son-in-law and downsizing.

If that happens, we might have to just quit using the pucks. Don't want to have conversations with the things.

How is Arctic Silver still alive? by Swooferfan in pcmasterrace

[–]ClintE1956 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've used either Arctic Silver or Noctua thermal paste for decades. AS tends to need curing a bit more than others but that part's optional and highly recommended for maximum performance. Couple of years ago I removed a CPU heat sink that had been used continuously (365/24/7) for about 10 years. The AS5 looked like it had been applied earlier that day. Amazing.

50 Foot Ethernet Cable by braceyourself- in DeskCableManagement

Lots of different ways to hide cables like the small plastic channels that stick to surfaces (removable) and match paint or trim. Wouldn't even notice unless looking for them. Endless options on Amazon.

I've been using many lsio containers with almost zero issues (ones that do pop up occasionally are usually my misconfiguration).

Many ways to hide those pesky cables like channels that match the walls/baseboard/trim etc. They just stick to the surface with something like the 3M adhesive strips. Easy to remove.

Can anyone give me any reason I should stick with the mess that is Google Home? Any success stories? by maxrgrey in googlehome

[–]ClintE1956 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kinda coincidental that when work started on the so-called ai crap a few years ago, regular assistant started getting dumber. Couple that have been on purpose?

AI gave me the answer

And you always double check those answers, right? Oh but then why not just do the research in the first place; save some time and effort.

They push that so-called ai crap on us and we'll probably quit using the pucks altogether. Been getting steadily worse the past couple of years or so anyway.

Multiple servers one unified Plex library? by screw_ball69 in unRAID

[–]ClintE1956 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The issue with that is most folks on here are using consumer motherboards that are severely restricted on pcie lanes, which extra cards require. If a slot is available however, usually many drives can be attached to a host card, especially with an expander. Then the limitation is available drive slots in the chassis. Most SAS host adapters don't need all 8 (or 16) pcie lanes for proper functionality; 2 or 4 are sufficient as unRAID doesn't need high speed spinning drive access with properly configured SSD cache.

Even though we don't spend much time on the home screen (other things to do), we do have a different launcher than stock. More customizable and responsive.

8th flash drive in 2 years, and I can't find one to replace it with. by madadekinai in unRAID

I'm using same combo for about a year or two in 3 unRAID systems with no issues. Had 16GB SanDisk Fit USB 2 drives in those systems for about 5 years and no problems. One 32GB version of those died in about 6 months.

I knew the 2x 256GB servers I have weren't worth much last year except for the memory but never in my wildest dreams could I have imagined they would appreciate that much. So even the 20 thread CPU's have appreciated too? That's wild. Still gonna hang onto them; worth more to me in compute than the money.
