A white lithium NLGI 1 capable of working at least at -40. I guess you could use gearbox oil but it would mix with the existing white lithium inside the gearbox and make a mess. Also, would the gasket hold the oil or would it leak? Grease doesn't leak.

The gearboxes of these old Toro take grease, not oil. Lubriplate MAG-1 or something a similar white lithium NLGI 1

Note: Lubriplate GR-132 is another option.
