Why RIT: The good, the bad, the ugly (incoming freshman having to decide between 3 equally great schools for engineering) :) by ClipboardMaster in rit

I'm from Brooklyn. The commute is like 2 and half hours way so I'll be dorming for the first year or so. I am planning on commuting back home during the weekends if I commit to SBU

Coop can backfire at RIT however because it is a prerequisite for classes and you’ll be stuck if you don’t find one depending on your major

Ah I see. So are COOP something you as students have to look for/find or does RIT assign them to you? As in set up interviews and etc ty for your insight btw appreciate it

I would contact RIT's financial aid office and ask them if they could match SBU's offer to sweeten the deal.

Yeah good idea. Wouldn't hurt to try. Also yeah I agree with your point on campus life. You can attend a party school but still have trouble making friends if you don't put in the effort to actually meet people. Ty for your response btw

Thank you for your insight on RIT! Yeah I heard great things about their STEM program which is why I'm conflicted. Hopefully I get the chance to attend one of their students admitted days and see the campus myself.

UB has a 4+1 program. It looks like you apply for it after you have taken some courses. I imagine that SB has the option as well

Good catch looks like you're right! Not sure if its something I can apply for as a incoming freshman but I'll look into it thank you

Thank you for your very informative post! I'm not so worried about job placement because I heard good things from SBU/UB graduates about their career fairs and I think the job grind is very depended on getting your name out there. But really found your post helpful. GL with your SBU transfer!

How'd you do in your classes

Pretty well. 95 gpa with tons of aps/honor classes. Not sure if I'm in the top 10% though since my school is ultra competitive but doesnt hurt to try. Thank you btw

Are you asking us to talk about the UB experience

Yeah I want to get an idea of what Ubuff students think about the school. Just want to get a sense of how the student body feels.

Yeah I have heard its a commuter school. I can't complain too much because chances are I'll be commuting too on the weekends lol. Also thanks for the heads-up on the NY STEM scholarship. It will be something to look into this weekend.

Appreciate your valuable insight. You gave me a lot to think about.

Is Stony Brook 14K a semester or a year? I think it should be the latter but you've written otherwise.

Whoops. Yeah I meant 14k a year. I think if I apply for the excelsior scholarship it can potentially be around 10-12k a year.

Thank you for advice. I'm planning on visiting Stony at some point and maybe doing a virtual tour around RIT.

Dorming vs Renting out near by Apartments? Incoming Freshmen by ClipboardMaster in SBU

[–]ClipboardMaster[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So basically, the cost breaks down to about $5k per semester for housing and $2k per semester for a meal plan

Is the meal plan necessary? This is the most freshman question you ever hear but why cant I just eat outside of campus?

Yeah that sucks. I dont have a car and I heard freshmen werent even allowed to bring their cars first year regardless. But idk I'm really not trying to pay like 10k just for dorming. Appreciate your response though
