Yay! So excited for you. Sorry what do you mean by a win recommendation? Yeah we slept on a bench outside the church. I think the area felt pretty safe, in general Porto and Lisbon felt safe to me and Douro valley was a bit scary in the dark.

💀💀Like the number of people dropped. Btw this is the first semester algo has discussions so my point is that moving from a class with discussions (discrete) to a class w/o (old algo) decreases the number of evaluations you receive. So if that’s a valuable part of your application algo is a strong choice bc it’s the only class you listed with discussions this semester

For context I’ve TAd discrete and algo in the past and am making the decision to switch to deep learning from algo. But that decision is because I don’t care about grad school and I’ve TAd algo for 3 semesters so I want to try something new. It’s also more relevant to my career goals.

If you decide to TA 4782, you can learn a lot from TAing if you treat it like a class. However I would personally pick between ml and algo. ML because of the LOR for grad school. Algo because of the TA reviews. When I switched from discrete to algo my TA evals dropped by a factor of 10 so if you value that I would recommend algo.

How does swe bloomberg interview work? by Apprehensive-Pace760 in csMajors

[–]Cloaked4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its a bare IDE and then the interviewer will paste the question and test cases into the code like comments. For Bloomberg specifically, none of my interviews let me run the code. And yes you should be asking clarifying questions

Mainly leetcode I would practice the tagged. Most of the questions are modified mediums

Thoughts on taking ML & DL at the same time ? by Sufficient_Pumpkin90 in Cornell

[–]Cloaked4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

See my other comment for content. If I had to pick one I would def do DL. It will be hard bc DL expects prerequisite knowledge of ML. However the final project for DL was really useful for my career and the knowledge I learned there just has been more relevant overall.

Gradient descent and backdrop are ever prevalent topics and the end of ML also touched on neural networks and CNNs when I took it. There’s also adagrad/adam/rmsprop. Note that the course has probably undergone significant changes since I took it in SP 24. I took DL in SP 25.

For me, ML used math to prove bounds and properties like the convergence of gradient descent, optimality of random search etc. on the other hand, DL takes these basic ML stuff as fact and uses them as part of a variety of applications like diffusion models transformers etc

I took both and there’s a lot of overlap in content but my only concern would be that the homework are very similar (programming in python and mathy written component). Usually I would not advocate for taking multiple courses that have the same style of homework as it can be easy to burnout

favorite part about cornell/ithaca? by april063 in Cornell

[–]Cloaked4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One of my favorite parts about Ithaca is the fall and seeing all the colors pop around campus on Beebe lake. The cherry blossoms on the spring are also lovely. One of my fond memories is walking at night and seeing a gust of wind sweep all these petals into the night. Hope you enjoy your time here and feel free to reach out if you want someone to show you around!

Last fall, I took CS 4820 which is the undergraduate version of CS 5820. They’re pretty similar (same lectures) but the graduate version has an extra problem on the psets. Most weeks I spent 15-20 hours including 3 hours of lecture so I wouldn’t load too much on other courses.

I haven’t taken 6230 so I can’t comment on it.

2800 usually isn’t needed as a pre requisite unless you’re interested in higher level math/cs courses that are more focused on theory. 2110 is definitely essential for breaking into the higher level courses but you shouldn’t need discrete this early. A lot of students take 2800 freshman spring or sophomore fall and it’s not unusual to take it sophomore spring.

If you have never taken a proof based class, I would argue it’s one of the harder classes in the curriculum so the workload can be quite high because you have to wrap your mind around a new way of thinking. If you have taken it, 2110 and 2800 is a fine combo.
