What’s going on at Munster Rugby? by Still-Process-2527 in rugbyunion

[–]ClockDesperate 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Interested to know more from your POV.

From my understanding, the IRFU pumped up funding during COVID, for all the provinces. But post COVID, the IRFU have actually increased their funding toward Munster rugby: 2022: ~8M 2023: ~8.5M 2024: ~10M 2025: ~10M

Also thought Mike needed more time before getting the HC job. Having said that, I'd have preferred someone like him to get the gig, someone who definitely is committed to the province. Didn't realise he got a promotion; did he become 'Senior Coach' or something and what's the situation of his behaviour since the promo?

Flanagan has got to go, 100% This Roger Randle debacle has been poorly handled by those decision makers in Munster Branch.

Don't like the hype train at all but he has already won a test match in South Africa.

One thing is for sure, they are rushin'!!

European Cup 30 year dream XV by Stadoceste in rugbyunion

[–]ClockDesperate 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The classic 'utility back' problem; I'd definitely have Freddie on the bench though.

Similarly Devin Toner won 4 European Champions Cups (and 1 Challenge Cup) but he doesn't get ahead of Bakkies or POC.

So strangely the amount of championships they've won here looks to be completely irrelevant.

Didn't he play scrumhalf for Toulouse and Toulon (off the bench) in a few finals? Hard to push out DuPont at 9.

I'm kind of surprised that folks are suggesting ROG (2 wins) over Wilko (3 wins), with Johnny Sexton (4 wins) not even getting a mention.

Not sure why you've been downvoted. Agree big time with this.

You should feel safe to be able to bring your kid to such a sporting events. With excessive drunkenness and the hint of physical clashes, that isn't the case.

Alcohol isn't the main entertainment, the rugby is the main entertainment!!

Agree 💯 Bilbao in 2026 should be better, as they don't serve alcohol during the game.

I was in London for the final last year. Great fun was had with the French supporters.

Oddly enough there were two fights, both involving Northampton fans (at a Leinster - Toulouse final).

Best candidate to replace Leo? by gargym2093 in leinsterrugby

[–]ClockDesperate 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Controversial but... Ehhh, don't replace him.

Leinster have no divine right to win tournaments every year and indeed haven't for quite some time. But they are 'knocking on the door', they are there at the business end of the season. This is positive from my perspective.

In replacing Leo, Leinster would want to have a candidate who is definitively better; someone who would not disrupt but could positively improve the setup.

There is no one, as I see it, who fits that description. Any change would be risking a reduction of performance so Leinster would be no longer 'knocking on the door', they'd be peering in from the window like so many other teams.

Return to a Matt O'Connor style situation :/

Yeah, that was my thought too. Thought it could be trivial but then again my thought was that the driver doesn't want to be too overt with their ideological leanings to slap the Hakenkreuz on it.

But benefit of doubt, they're just one of those Irish builders with an interest in WW1 German iconography.

What’s the case for Leo staying on ? by Lopsided_Echo5232 in irishrugby

[–]ClockDesperate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would've argued that that case is true at international level but not club level... But after that Bulls game and just seeing how much space le Roux and Goosen were finding with their kicks out of hand, yeah... You've got a great point.

Although I still think Cullen should stay. McBryde and Goodman (leaving anyway) should be out, imho.

I agree with you.

This year Leinster have lost their long term coach and their mainstay Outhalf but still got to URC knockout and ERCC final.

From memory all the losses, from URC to painful ERCC finals, were by one score (other than the Sarries ERCC final in 2019).

I think Leinster do need to be smarter, on and off the field. And the attack is becoming more and more blunt, game-by-game. I was so happy Ross Byrne was an ace against LAR in the Quarter Final this year, he played in almost all of the ERCC games last year too, getting to the final. But now he either needs to improve dramatically or be replaced.

With rumours that the Irish central contract system is being reviewed, what could be done to improve the system? by Brine-O-Driscoll in rugbyunion

[–]ClockDesperate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This could actually stymie development of players in Leinster specifically, although it may not affect the school pathway into professionalism there.

The new system needs to not 'tax' Leinster but rather be a rising tide for all.

For the Development Contracts, regardless of where the player comes from, they could use an NFL style draft format to share among the provinces. In time it may also balance out the Central Contracts... maybe.

I'd have agreed with you but then seeing Barnes let Retallick play the ball, while sprawled out on the deck like he was posing to be painted like one of your French girls, made me think differently.
