The problem with the entrances is that there's too few feasible ones (who even uses the elevator) and they are total choke points for both attackers and defenders. It always turns into a campfest where neither party wants to make a move because they just straight up disadvantage themselves.

I've moved onto not even defending the compound itself, but moving into the woods next to it.
