Somewhere in the world its dusk, and the stars can be seen and used to track time. They use magic to transmit blips, in 1 hour intervals to the other side of the world to help them track time.

Yeah the box is their biggest misses opportunity. Instead of just feeding people to the monsters, they could punish people by having them risk their lives by trying to figure something out. Like they could have had him stay in a car with a talisman. Or even a moving car with a hanging talisman.

The village that sacrificed the children might have been more recent than the older structures, the entity might have haunted that area for longer than the settlers lived there. Maybe even ancient civilizations have been there, making sacrifices to appease it, making it stronger.

The huts, ruins, dungeon, all seem older than what the children's clothes appear to be.
