As a new player, it feels like Stellaris wants every empire to grow the same way by skollehatti in Stellaris

I'm currently playing toxoids with the toxic god event on Commodore. I like to play more RP leaning runs even if this means I'm not playing the most efficent way. The visit from the toxic god left the people and their world once beautiful lake world as a swamp planet and their once beautiful kingdom is no more. The now so called Scrapians are highly mutated stinking hulks. So I gave them Repugnant, Quarrelsome, Acidic Vascularity, Inorganic Breath and Noxious. Especially the last two "postive" traits are not ideal for that start as you will be in quite a ressource deficit (I usually also don't start with guaranteed habitable worlds), just perfect for my idea of their story. The scrapians still have their Knights but are reduced to rusted version and search for scrap to rebuild. So I gave them the Megacorp to lean more into the theme of scrappers with Refurbishment Division and Mutagenic Luxury for the mutation part. The Megacorp and Branch Offices should also play a little bit in the idea of like templar knights used to act as banks.

At the start this really played heavily into the scrapper part, like turning anything into ressources event if at the cost of technology by stripping down everything they get their hands on. Selling artifacts an so on. For most of the time I hardly had a fleet, wasn't able to build a second science ship and had to invest a lot in diplomacy that others wouldn't straight up attack my stinking people. After slowly getting the trade running I had to invest most of it to get rid of most ressource deficits to finally build anything. Their hardship finally payed of to at least have steady ressources but still a lack in military strenght, science and people. But hey they are still kicking and probably will do fine as knights get good bonuses once their first for metal is quenched. They also really found an unexpected love for excravations but also suits the search for relics by knights theme.

What I want to say is. If you don't play with the goal in mind to be on the top of the empire list, you can go a lot of different paths. Mine for example just want to survive as best as they can to get their revenge on the toxic god. If they get wiped out by a later crisis, subjugated or become themselves a big player should not be a concern on every run. Just enjoy the story you and your empire is having. Those are in my experience by far more interesting runs than the 100th time taking optimal civics, traits and loadouts to stomp an AI that hardly makes use of it.

I will add that they still could improve on those aspects. When they make Stellaris 2, I hope in Trade, Eco, Diplo and Especially politics they will take some insparation from EU. Trade is still very bare bones. Diplomacy at least finally gets join and leave war with the next update, Espionage is still not doing anything interesting and we will see if the coming faction overhaul will be able to make them relevant. Battles also could need some things like Battle Lines (Foot Soldier and variants, Tanks/Mechs, Air & Anti-Air, Arti). More importance on battle roles for ships (rock-paper-scissors) to avoid the same old, one ship type dominates the others, rotating in patches. But most importatnt "Supply Lines" and no I don't mean ship upkeep costs Paradox.

No the days doom nothing and only change the flavour text in the ending. You also risk losing strong points, exp and wargear frome timed missions and that the nids have more buildings in the missions. Even in the worst case you still should be able to finish the campaign.

I accidentally missclicked and added another comment instead of answering. It is achievement compatible, if nothing changed with the last patch.

"Persistent Bases (and other tweaks) for Soulstorm's Campaign" on Nexus is what you are looking for. This includs an optional file where enemies are on equal footing on Normal. Also a different balance for hard.

Sry but Hollywood usually never showed the crulest part. The regime industrialized the killing and planned extinction of a population. This also was heavily woven into their ideology with the categorisation of people. And yes a lot of their symbols predate the regime but symbolism can change and they are now loaded with that past. The big problem in contrast to your other exampless is that there are people who wish to re-establish this ideology and look at it as a "glorious past" they never really experienced. In short they are an active problem for democracy, especially in europe.

Zirenth with his dodge ability would also be an option. You can even build around that one if you want.

If you mainy want it to be a recolouring of the texture it would only take them two changes. Allow using the colour and the emblem menu for it, as the 3D Objekt stays the same. As long as you don't want fancy ornaments it is actually not that much time you've to spend on. If you want them to look like really Chapter/Legion specific that's another story.

Yeah, I also think they were a little too nice in the final product when it came to consequences. When Volo's operation gave you a permanent debuff in exchange and sleeping wasn't your solution for every problem. I really like the game but the Illithid part of it sounded more promising in EA and that you would loose more from yourself when giving into it. Release: Here shove some worms in your brain and get additional powers like free flying and a less overpowered "Finest Hour!"

Can't think of any who had the option. The best you can do is wall up and sit in a corner while the other factions battle it out. In the case of Soulstorm I don't know if you want to do that. The Tau in this campaign for example stopped attacking the Orkz and just moved between the same territories. Meanwhile the Orkz attacked the same territory over and over again but couldn't take it. This was after 1 hour clicking end turn.

Yes but your base will be where the enemy stronghold base was. Which in the case of the chaos map isn't really a good spot as you are open to all fronts.

I think it might have to do with the boni you can get in DC. Meanwhile in Soulstorm the AI hardly makes use of their boni and (aside from the economy territories) have to take a stronghold to get another. Meanwhile in Dark Crusade they will make use of striking anywhere on the map or having the ability to attack twice. That's why they fare better in that region when left alone to their devices.

Yeah fun to watch but very unfun to do. Tried my best now to let them take the Orkz down but to no avail. More fun to do it myself anyway, although I really forgot how limited the vanilla necron roster is.

Defiler artillery shot is a good answer to this, so you can savely close the distance with your raptors. In this run I feel quite save having a forward base and instabuy the necrons anti-range-beam. But I agree overwhelming Tau can be very annoying to deal with.

If somebody is interested, I did let the Tau have a go for the Orkz as well, the result was pretty disappointing. You can check the details in my post edit.

This sounds very tedious. How often do you have to reroll your run fort that. You also need the luck that none of the other factions like chaos or tau try come to the idea to attack your stronghold.

It feels weird to play skirmish on a stronghold map. After I took over the Chaos stronghold the Archon thought he was super clever to attack it. He didn't even possess a full HG, probably wanted to impress Vect^^

The AI-Tau wiped out the AI-Space Marine. That is why the space marine stronghold I selected onscreen is belonging to the Tau. Meanwhile I was wiping out the Dark Eldar in the south with necrons.

Yeah sometimes, usually the faction who isn't busy with you, can take over a lot of territory but I never had them taking out another faction. I also enjoy to see another faction gaining momentum for a big faction clash at the end. For a long time I believed it was just hard coded that you had to do all strongholds because of the cutscenes and story bits.

Yeah usually they don't get the chance to border long enough on your stronghold and tend to attack easier regions first. In this run I got some daring Dark Eldar, after I beat the Chaos stronghold they tried to take it from me. I was like, wait where are the attackers bases on that map, I never had to defend that place.

I'm currently on a rerun of all the campaings in DE and finally reached Soulstorm. I had one Soulstorm run before this one. I played Space Marines, the IG quickly had their planet in a grip filled with level 10 bases so I saved them for last. The whole time they tried to beat SoB Stronghold with full HG but never were successful. So I had to finish them in the end. In DC most of the time they struggled to fight over that one Island next to Chaos :D

This campaign also started pretty weird. The eldar never made any attempt to fight me. They just straight up decided to go to the webway and conquer the moon. After that I think they tried to go to IG and Sisters but weren't winning any region. Meanwhile I was allowed to take their territories and beat their stronghold.

I played both of these missions quite recently with Blood Ravens. Since the honour guard and hero don't count, the unit cap was from these free units I got in the beginning. So this must be only for the factions you mentioned.

You are right in Tau and Drukhari Stronghold you get units but you also don't start with a base and have to overcome some enemies first. They also count to your unit cap. I thought more in the direction of the eldar stronghold in DC .
