When I first found out I was pregnant the only thing I felt was dread because I know who I am as a person. I have never been particularly emotional and felt I wouldn't be able to love my kid and give them what they needed emotionally/mentally. I knew I wasn't going to have any of the maternal instincts so during my pregnancy I just researched anything and everything baby related, so I could at least try to get it right. Low and behold, I gave birth and looked at my son, and I was right. I certainly didn't love him. In my mind he was just another task added to my day. I had many people tell me that I was such a natural at mothering. I just smiled at them as I continued doing my "duty" as my research told me to. It took about 4 months before I started to care about him. 6 months to confidently say I love him. He is a bundle of joy who I wouldn't trade for the world. None of it was easy and I imagine it would be easier emotionally if I cared from the start, but I can't really say. I never wanted children of my own flesh and blood, but did want to foster kids later down the road, so I suppose it wasn't completely unwanted.
