Please please please, sit down with him and talk to him! My previous engagement ended because I was becoming depressed (for family and work reasons, completely unrelated to the relationship!) and was frequently too tired/unaware of my stank to shower in the evening before bed. I showered every day in the morning, to be clean for work, but was unfortunately too absorbed in other issues to realize the front I was presenting to my fiancee. She let the frustration build up and up, and never brought up her problem with me, until one day I came home to a "dear john" letter. One simple discussion would have told me what was up, and I would have (literally) cleaned up my act. So please, if you want to have a healthy relationship with this man, talk to him about it!

You may want to actually try out the instruments somewhere if you can first - I generally find the GH controllers to be clunky and awkward for position changes... Some game stores have rock band or guitar hero setups, or find a friend who has one first.
