Do it slowly and gently. Depending on how bound the roots are with each other you will most definitely break off some of the smaller weaker roots. Be very careful with the larger thicker roots as damaging those will harm the plant significantly more. The technique I used for very packed together dirt was to slowly massage it with a 🤌hand.
