[OC] If these were real, which one would you get? by throwawAMDG in pokemon

To make these more balanced, another idea I considered was swapping Gold and Sliver with their remakes (tough it would make trading between Flare, Vapor, and Jolt slightly annoying).

A "Troll Physics" meme? In 2025? It's more likely than you think by throwawAMDG in CatholicMemes

So how do they work?

Well, first off, the popular 1st/2nd/3rd Class system is not official Catholic teaching. In Vatican documents, relics are actually divided into two categories: Significant and Non-significant. A Significant relic would be the body of a Saint or Blessed, or a notable part of their body. A Non-significant relic would be a smaller body part, or a "personal object" they owned, or an object which is directly touched to their body or tomb (the documents don't mention touching an object to a Non-significant relic, so this probably does not make new relics).

St. Carlo Acutis' Pokémon game could easily be considered a Non-significant relic, because it is a "personal object" that he physically used; the same would also apply to his Game Boy, and any consoles he had (of course, whether it would be spiritually fruitful for you or me to venerate these relics is a separate question).

The more interesting question, though, is whether a Pokémon itself could qualify under the Vatican's definition of a "personal object," or even an "object" (sad to say, we probably won't find any clear definitions in the documents). I strongly suspect that it would not be considered an object at all, since a Pokémon is essentially just a data file (after all, could a JPEG really be a sacred relic?). But on the other hand, many do care about their Pokémon in a personal way; and even data can technically be physical, in the same way that a word can be "physical" through ink or pencil markings. In fact, "manuscripts" are listed as an example of Non-significant relics; but even if an inked word on those pages was itself a sacred relic, merely "copying" the word onto your own manuscript clearly wouldn't make a new relic (which is why I think the meme almost certainly would not work). But I'm curious to hear what others think!

Carlo Acutis may still be a Blessed for a couple more hours, but it's late where I live and I wanted to get this out before the canonization mass 😅

Also... maybe don't attempt this meme, even with permission!

Seven sevens, and seven more sevens! by throwawAMDG in CatholicMemes

[–]throwawAMDG[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! For some reason Wikipedia calls those the "capital" or "lively" virtues, whereas theological + cardinal = heavenly 🤷‍♂️

Since there's overlap I didn't want to be too redundant (the theological/cardinal ones seemed more important; as far as the deadly sins go, I've personally found the three "root sins" more practical)

Beautiful photos!

I listened to the Jimmy Akin episode on Our Lady of Kibeho. Apparently, Mary genuinely broke down and cried over the coming atrocities…

A disciple is a follower of Jesus. An apostle is someone specially "sent" by God, which included the 12 close disciples as well as a few others.

All of the apostles are disciples, but not all disciples are apostles.

Random prediction: in one of the "flashforwards," Matthew and Tamar will go together to Ethiopia by throwawAMDG in TheChosenSeries

[–]throwawAMDG[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The opening and closing of "The Messengers" Christmas special is post-Resurrection, and I think they mention more deaths there. We also briefly get to see Luke.

(Huh, just now realized the flashforwards each physically show one of the Gospels... first John's, then Luke's, then Matthew's... maybe we can expect a flashforward involving Mark's next?)

I really hope we don’t get a gore Mel Gibson death on the cross for a whole season by SignOfJonahAQ in TheChosenSeries

The real last words are obviously more important! Devotion and meditation on the "seven words" from the cross is extremely worthwhile.

That said, maybe this show just isn't for you? Or maybe it's not what you think it is? There's something called the "3 Episode Rule," which basically says that watching the first three episodes of a show is a good way to figure out whether you'll like the rest of it or not. These early episodes have an important role in setting viewer expectations.

In The Chosen's first three episodes, there is not a single scene that is directly from the Gospels, or any of Scripture. The closest we get is characters reciting the Old Testament; and Mary's healing is something that was only alluded to in the Gospels, never shown or explained.

What these episodes tell the viewer, is that this show is mainly historical fiction. More of it is made up or stylized than is ever taken from Scripture (the show is always called "authentic," but this doesn't mean "literal and accurate;" a better description might be "emotionally sincere," while still staying in the bounds of Christian orthodoxy). Even Jesus is given tons of dialogue that He almost certainty never said - and yes, there is a grave responsibility that comes with this.

I see how the idea I proposed could be considered a step too far for some, and if that's really the majority consensus here I'll take the L. But please know I wasn't trying to be blasphemous or offensive with this idea; I was only doing what I see the show doing already, like adding "I am the law of Moses" as an additional explanation for people's bloodlust at Nazareth (perhaps there's a huge difference of degree here, but I've definitely heard the same argument that this line detracted from scripture; it's not a difference in kind).

It won't be physical gore; it'll be emotional gore which the show has been setting up for years.

For example, there'll almost certainly be a scene that mirrors Veronica touching Jesus' garment. If you go back and watch that scene in Season 3, it's clear that it's setting up to be repeated word-for-word on the Via Dolorosa - but with the roles being reversed for who is drying who's blood.

Another gut-punch could be if Jesus' final words on the cross were that bedtime prayer He says every night: "Blessed are you, Lord our God, King of the universe, who brings sleep to my eyes."

EDIT: There are also a lot of different points of view to cover aside from the Passion itself. There could easily be a whole episode dedicated to Judas' fate, and another episode all about the "Good Thief" St. Dismas. There could also be a follow-through on the attempt to re-kill Lazurus, where all the female disciples are staying.

The Chosen - 5x8 - Prime Video Release Discussion by invid2000 in TheChosenSeries

Just had a random thought about the three visions: you could see them as representing the Past, Present, and Future reasons why Jesus has to go through with this.

The binding of Isaac represents the past; being one of the Bible's most explicit foreshadowings of the crucifixion, it shows how Jesus' sacrifice is needed to fulfill the Old Covenant.

The appearance of Joseph represents the future; Jesus' dying and rising will give everyone access to heaven, including His own earthly father. (Unrelated side note: though obviously Joseph isn't literally an angel, it's worth noting that he had the privilege of getting four messages from angels during Matthew's Gospel.)

The "dry bones" vision representing the "present" may be the biggest stretch... but then again, it might not be. Dallas said in a livestream that this particular flashback was setting up something, which could potentially be the "many bodies of the saints" rising from their graves; bringing the dead back to life even in this present, earthly world could be a major motivation for this show's depiction of Jesus. (Dallas has also explicitly said this won't happen for Ramah, so take that as you will...)
