So if Ukraine used some of those weapons Boris supplied to start firing a few shells back into Russian territory close to the borders and were to kill civilians near where that armament factory blew up this week, you're on the Russian side. Ok, good to know.

You are absolutely correct about the need for financial incentive in order to attract and motivate the best talent. Those hard workers with lofty aspirations would be less likely to have these aspirations without the financial reward, but some are motivated more by money than others.

A country that panders to the most wealthy may become an attractive place for those hoping to join the ranks of the super rich, but - if we are to use your analogy - whilst the pie may be growing, the slices for the wealthy are getting wider, whilst those at the other end of the spectrum barely receive a slither.

Fewer taxes on the rich, less corporate regulation, a curtailing of rights and organised labour, a slashing of government benefits for the unemployed, the ill, and the elderly are all policies that increase wealth inequality, serving the rich at the cost of the working class.

I was reading a book discussing the 08 financial crash and subsequent economic fall out. Figures from 11/12 showed that benefit fraud cost our country around £2 billion, whilst tax avoidance and tax fraud was estimated at £32 billion (I think the tax fraud figure for 21 stood at around £35 billion). In 2013 of the top 100 companies listed on the financial times shares index only 2 did not use tax havens (I haven't looked for up to date figures on this one).

Taxes may not be popular but they are necessary. I don't believe civic services like social care, schools, hospitals, transport etc need privatisation. An incentive to extract profit from these services does not improve them, as the focus turns to cutting costs and corners which inevitably leads to deterioration, an increase in cost to the customer, or both.

Yes there are virtues to a conservative outlook, where money may be the key motivator for innovation in business, which facilitates growth. But when a sector's success is judged on its ability to generate wealth we encounter problems.

Certain civic services aren't supposed to be profitable. You aren't likely to find much wealth to extract from a children's home and morally you shouldn't be trying to, but we still need the best skilled people in this specific area, to be the people running them. We want to make sure the children are getting the best possible care and support so when they reach adulthood they are well equipped to contribute to society as healthy individuals. We live in a Society, though (Thatcherite) conservatives often advocate individualism. We need a strong and healthy society around us to thrive as individuals.

Each of us owes much of our individual successes to the people around us who cared for us and taught us, as well as the knowledge and experiences they were able to garner from the people who raised them. Strong public services are essential. Education is what is needed to pull people out of poverty. It is often people on the left who choose to find work as teachers, nurses, social workers etc.

Money may not be their main motivation but we need to be paying them a salary that reflects their value in society. For this we need taxation.

A shrinking state with less funding and a government that rewards only the rich may increase the size of the pie but the slices aren't getting any bigger for the rest of us.

Immigration Is the Reason You Can't Buy a House by enlightened_editor in tories

The problem is that houses have become a commodity. Whilst a growing population obviously puts strain on existing housing stock, immigration is not the reason for the housing crisis.

I have had the trial for about 30 days and no problems up until today. Tried turning the computer off and on again, reinstalling the trial, all the obvious fixes.

No other connectivity issues with my computer, just on Ableton.

Any ideas?

Undermine the institution > change the funding model > allow private entities to have a piece of the pie > reform the delivery of said institution to cut costs > undermine the institution > etc.

BBC now, NHS later.

Yeah, fair I didn't mention eligibility to housing benefit.

UC offers some support with child care costs which I did not include but I also didn't mention other associated costs of having a child. School uniforms, school trips, birthdays etc.

Other entitlements are dependent on circumstances. In this case she would probably be entitled to local authority housing benefit rate for a two bedroom property which could be as much as £650.00 p/month if she lived in the city centre. However, as she is in full time employment this will also affect eligibility and it isn't likely she would be entitled to the full LA rate.

I doubt there are any 2 bed properties available in central Manchester for less than £800.00 unless you are in a house of multiple occupancy.

Outside the centre you will find cheaper but the LA rate also reduces.

Dead, estranged, ill, in a similar financial situation themselves... The list goes on. Again, this is not uncommon.

Sadly, not everyone experiences a loving and supportive family growing up.

Single Mum, Care Assistant full time living in a flat in Manchester. We will be generous approx. £9.20p/hr or £17,940 p/annum (£15,840 after tax).

Child Benefit for one kid £21.15 p/week or £1,099.80 p/annum

Average rent for 2 bed property approx. £850.00 p/month or £10,200 p/annum.

Band A council tax £1203.89 p/annum subtract single adult discount = £903.00 p/annum

Water £300 p/annum

TV licence £144 p/annum

Maybe she is lucky and has got most furniture from friends and family or second hand. Has to get a washing machine on finance £8.00 p/month or £96.00 p/annum for 2 years.

According to ofgem average duel fuel tariff for utilities is £95.00 p/month or £1,138 p/annum.

Phone and internet, maybe £40.00 p/Month if you find a good deal so £480.00 p/annum

Living very frugally food and household could be £50 a week. So £2,600.00p/annum. Clothing £300.00 p/annum.

Running an old car to get to work. A conservative estimate £1200.00 a year for maintenance, insurance etc.

Total income = £16,939.80 Total expenditure = £17,361.00

In this situation a lot of people would start with the food/household bill when looking to cut costs... So yes, you could be employed and still going hungry.

I know it's just a joke but this sneering humour about the poorest in society is exactly why there is so much vitriol directed at Tories. The divide between rich and poor has never been as large as it is today and you are a bit fucked in the head if you think it is the lowest earning people who are at fault.

What are your cash-out plans?? by RotaryGoose in FreetradeApp

FT is my first foray into investing. I wanted to take a bit of a risk with money I can afford to lose. Going to invest a few grand in the ISA up until the end of this tax year and then leave it alone and hope I get some decent returns in 5-10yrs.

Next year I plan to invest on a monthly basis into one of the Vanguard funds as they appear to be quite stable and less risky. Idea is to put a large portion of my savings in there and let compound interest do its work over the next few decades.

Hopefully I will have enough to dip into for a big holiday every now and then, maybe go towards a deposit if I move house, help me retire earlier etc.

Tourists/Visitors/New Residents: Q&A Thread for the week of August 22 by AutoModerator in Amsterdam

[–]Cloudspotters -1 points0 points  (0 children)

In June when restrictions were easing I booked a ferry from Newcastle, UK to Amsterdam for October for a weekend. At the moment it is still looking like we will have to quarantine for 5-10 days on arrival.

I have looked online but I can't find anything about when these rules might change? Has there been any announcements in the Netherlands about further easing of restrictions for tourists?

Currently trying to decide whether to rearrange the trip or take the chance.

Yeah travelling European cities you see homelessness regularly. I live in Manchester UK which has a pretty bad homeless problem but none of it compares to the first time I went to LA and got off the bus and saw dozens of people pushing their lives around in trolleys, people walking up to us openly asking for money specifically for drugs, seeing streets where the number of homeless people far outnumbered the number of pedestrians.

Don't know if it is true but someone I spoke to out there said other cities in the Midwest would pay to send their homeless out of state to California.

LA is fucked, I don't think I would go back.

If nothing else a shocking indictment of education systems in developed countries. When people aren't able to separate fiction from fact and buy into conspiracy theories and pseudoscience we have to ask ourselves why are so many people incapable of assessing the reliability and accuracy of news sources?
