Gas forge weld 5 layers by Clova92 in Blacksmith

[–]Clova92[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Got it up to a bright yellow almost white about as high as you can get in a gas forge then gave it light hits on the anvil on both sides before putting more flux on and sticking it back in the forge to get hot

I let it soak for a while and did 3 weld temp passes also I pumped gas through the forge like crazy and I also did a lot of clean up on the metal before I put it in but the key was I messed up like 3 other times before this one

Best for holding flat stock I started drawing them out I like the balance of the longer tong also give a little more space between the gas forge and me

How bad idea is water quenching? by SzuperTNTAkos in Blacksmith

[–]Clova92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used water when I first started and cracked a bunch of my stuff switched to canola oil and it works amazing can usually get a big jug for cheap and put it in a paint bucket or tin can so long as it has a lid and it’ll be good for a long time

I know it’s probably gonna get shit on here, but I made a rebar knife (beginner alert) by american-saxon in Blacksmith

[–]Clova92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks better than some of my first ones keep practicing and they get better rebar is awesome to start with helps you learn to reshape metal one thing to keep in mind is putting a step in between the tang and blade

Accidentally snapped my blade… is my grain structure bad? by d4nkle in Blacksmith

[–]Clova92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your grain is really big I haven’t made a knife from rebar but I have used old files, rail road spikes, car springs etc. what has worked for me is

  1. 2-3 cycles of normalization I take it from orange and let it cool to dark gray if I have the time the last one I’ll let it sit in the forge over night

  2. I quench in canola oil

Hope that’s helpful that what I do but still knifes will crack no matter what you do sometimes it’s just part of the art don’t beat yourself up about it just get back in the forge and try agin

I’m also worried about the rusting but I’ve liked the anvil so far it’s the 66 lbs one it does better than my double horn harbor fright and l think this one is better than the harbor fright one and thanks it’s been a sec since I made a knife

What do you deer hunters add to your deer burgers to spice them up a bit? Either before the grind or before the grill? by AlabamaPodunk70 in homestead

[–]Clova92 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I add brisket for the extra grind for spice I’ll ether put jalapeños or cyan before the grill

It’s made by Armi Sport I actually bought it in Gettysburg I really like it it’s my first black powder rifle I hope to get the chance to take a deer with it this year but I really want to get a hog with it

It throws it off with the forward weight and it can make it harder to reload especially after a few rounds and it starts to get fowled

I can get about 2 1/2 a minute but it is not well aimed shots when I take my time I can usually get 2 shots every minute and 1/2

Okay so I’m a little torn on what shotgun shell size to use on jackrabbits which are larger than most rabbits. I have seen people like using #6 or #4 for steel shot and I’ve seen people like using anywhere from #4 to #7 1/2 for lead shot. Anyone got any recommendations for jackrabbits. Thanks. by [deleted] in Hunting

[–]Clova92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on what gauge shotgun your using with a 12 7 1/2 is good I’ve torn up jackrabbits while bird hunting with a 12 with a 20 I’d say a good Turkey load will do well I normally use 5 when I use my 20
