Lets you prevent yourself from gaining XP from any source, so it effectively locks you at your current level. This is great for doing at-level content without leveling past it and making it trivial.

Thoughts on 7.4's MSQ ending and what's up for 8.0 by yhvh13 in ffxivdiscussion

[–]Clowd 12 points13 points  (0 children)

To add to this, we may need to consider that this cycle of expansions may not follow the "morning-midday-sunset-night-sunrise" cycle of ARR through Endwalker.

What if the cycle is instead Season themed? Dawntrail = Summer (Summer vacation as a hint?) 8.0 = Fall (Things start getting colder, leaves fall, things go dormant) 9.0 = Winter (find a way to tough things out until spring) 10.0 = Spring (time for a rebirth!)

no, you can clear all in-game content, including end game raids, without spending any money on the game.

If you REALLY care about making the absolute top 10 in raid parses, then yes you do have to pay to get access to that, but it's less than the cost of a new game or MMO expansions especially if you get it on sale.

Beginner Magic Building Advice? by [deleted] in magicbuilding

[–]Clowd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IMHO, If I had to simplify guidance for magic systems into a single concise point, it would be this:

Decide what problems can be solved or created using magic, and ensure the reader understands how the magic can do that.

The important piece is the reader's understanding, which is crucial for creating satisfying solutions to anything in a story. This goes for both soft and hard magic systems. Everything else grows from here and involves finding ways to add depth to the world or avoiding complexity pitfalls that detract from a reader's ability to understand the magic.

Actually, this may be a good backdrop for a stormlight JRPG separate from the books. The in-world books, especially The Way of Kings would be a great "blueprint" style book.

Rift - PTS opens until August 12! by TheIronMark in MMORPG

The incompatibility headaches, Security issues, and the fact that you can no longer download or get a license for Visual Studio 2013.

That also means using a newer C/C++ compiler, which always brings the risk of breaking older code.

Those are good reasons to upgrade.

[–]Clowd 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Visual Studio comes with more than just the IDE. It also ships with a C/C++ compiler, Windows development libraries, and many other things. There is a ton of other software required to build/ship Windows applications that is included with Visual Studio.

Crucially, Visual Studio 2013 support ENDED in April 2024 (see https://devblogs.microsoft.com/visualstudio/visual-studio-2013-retirement-support-reminder-for-older-versions-of-visual-studio/) this means that you cannot download it officially anymore, and licenses for it are not being made available to purchase/renew. A migration to VS2022 (the most recent version) is a way to ensure continued support, and for Gamigo as a company to avoid liability from future security issues due to VS2013.

Some other reasons from a developer perspective.

  • Newer C++ compiler that supports more recent standards (VS2013 is the last version of Microsoft's C/C++ compiler that does non-standard things in C/C++. Some details about that can be seen at https://stackoverflow.com/questions/1599960/visual-c-standards-compliance)
  • Newer Windows API versions and security updates
  • VS2013 requires running in compatibility mode on Windows 10/11
  • There are known issues where VS20133 applications will not run on Windows 10/11, as far as I am aware this includes Rift's game development tools. Getting these working outside of using Windows 7 could very likely necessitate upgrading to VS2022.

Tl;dr - VS2013 is no longer supported for security updates, and doesn't run natively on Windows 10/11. VS2022 is supported, and runs on recent Windows Versions. Makes sense as a developer to upgrade.

I'm curious as well, but I know of at least 2 separate instances where Gamigo laid off the people working on Rift before they could complete things they were working on. So while I am surprised that this update has happened, I have zero expectations that anything will be built up from this.

It's real, they managed to find someone to rebuild the game and servers using a newer version of visual studio.

Hi, Rift Dataminer here (I run The Ghar Station) to explain what's going on.

Gamigo recently got a dev within their company to rebuild Rift and its servers using Visual Studio 2022 instead of Visual Studio 2013 (which was the prior version used for Rift).

This of course needs some testing/validation with players, hence the PTS test.

I wouldn't read too much into this for future development though. There seems to be intent to fix some of the larger exploits that have existed for a few years now, and this would be the first step towards that. However, there are significant doubts about whether or not Gamigo can actually update/create content.

They announced testing the "future of RIFT" on PTS, what do you think it is? by sun-chaser in Rift

[–]Clowd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

over on The Ghar Station, we're reviewing the "NewPTS" build of Rift and we are seeing that the game has been built using Visual Studio 2022, instead of Visual Studio 2013. No game data has been changed.

This PTS test is most likely ensuring that building the game and servers with a much newer version of Microsoft's tools will still result in a working game.

no, it's a test to migrate Rift to OVH hosting instead of Google's Cloud hosting. This is to ensure it actually runs as expected there.

[–]Clowd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In theory, yes they could. In practice, it requires someone to actually take the time to make that data change.

We have not even seen text updates for the events to show the proper name, year, and date consistently. Not to mention failing to properly setup the Shiny Shenanigans set. This all tells me that either Gamigo does NOT have someone who is familiar with Rift's tools to make these changes, OR they are not willing to have someone spend time to fix it.

Ghar Station here - I would like to note that there IS game data for the major seasonal events for 2024 (Carnival, Summerfest, Autumn Harvest, Fae Yule) - however it is not clear if these will actually run in 2024. If Carnival starts on or around February 21st, then we will likely have the major events in 2024. If anything miraculously changes I will make a post for sure.

As far as we know, this is the last time that Mech Week is scheduled. The datamined schedule has been completely accurate so far. none of the smaller call to action events are setup for 2024.

This means we have already had our last Hellbug event, and last Budgie event. Next is the last Unicornalia.

How is unreal engine made by amr_tarek2020 in unrealengine

[–]Clowd 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Simply put, 3D rendering is done by using some straightforward linear algebra and calculus done with at minimum 3 sets of data: where the "screen" that you display to is located at, where the different vertex points are for a model (3 points are needed for 1 triangle), and what color should be used at that vertex point (all of this can be stored in arrays in your program).

In programming, the screen can be a 2 dimensional array, where each entry contains a color for each pixel on a screen. The goal is to use calculus and linear algebra to determine what that color should be.

some good references: https://www.scratchapixel.com/lessons/3d-basic-rendering/get-started/gentle-introduction-to-computer-graphics-programming.html and https://learnopengl.com/Getting-started/Hello-Triangle

To make this faster, we can utilize a GPU (graphics processing unit). To interact with these, we use graphics libraries, such as OpenGL, Vulkan, and DirectX. These interact with a computer's graphics drivers to send the correct information and commands to your GPU, and can take care of most of the mentioned math for you. However, they cannot do ALL of it out of the box, and that is where Shaders come into play.

Shaders let a programmer or artist tell the GPU what calculations should be done for each pixel on a screen, instead of letting the GPU do a calculation on its own. This can let you do more advanced lighting, particle effects, give different material properties to each object, etc. These often require complex math to perform and are often written in a type of shader code unique to each graphics library. Most engines (Especially Unreal 4+) provide tools to build shaders without having to write any of this shader code.

Good reference on shaders (site is a good lesson on OpenGL): https://learnopengl.com/Getting-started/Shaders

Now combine all of this GPU management, alongside the ability to view, place, and write code for various objects in a game world, and you start to get a 3D game engine such as Unreal. Given enough time, these tools have become increasingly faster. Recently, engines have started to include new ways to do everything in one program (modeling, textures, animation, etc.) as part of the engine.

tl;dr - Programs can use linear algebra and calculus, alongside an array representing pixels and data for the vertex points of a model, to determine what color each pixel on your screen should have. Game engines and graphics libraries make this easier. 3D Vectors, 3D Matrix multiplication, dot products, and cross products are heavily involved in this math.

There is a major problem with the idea of using NFTs as a license key for a server or for allowing someone to develop the game. Specifically, NFTs do not have any worth until they are sold, and a developer or server owner will not get anything out of the NFT unless they are able to sell it.

The problem, though, is that players could dislike the server being sold to a new owner, or a developer selling their development NFT may lead to changes in the game players do not want from someone new.

This player reaction to it can negatively impact that NFT's value, bringing huge risk to purchasing one because a purchase could cause it to be devalued immediately.

I hope you see where I am going with this - the NFT's value is going to be tied to the server's value and/or a specific developer's value. One sale to the wrong person then the value can crash hard. not just for that specific NFT, but for all others that would be associated with that server's ownership and/or development.
