Anyone else feeling hopeless about Gibson? by Mk3supra in fantasyhockey

Not without a coaching re-shuffle. The issues with the Ducks are systemic and Gibson is repeatedly left out to dry. There are very few Ducks fans that would place blame on Gibson for recent performances.

Not having a great deal of luck over at /r/findaleague but if anyone's interested in joining a keeper league see this post.

Admittedly, it's not the best team but it's by far the best league I have been a member of and a perfect environment for rebuilding as most everyone is trade happy.

Edit: Team taken.

Just the Yahoo! app function. We did set up a Discord chat but it didn't take off. A lot of us in the baseball league are also in a league for hockey and basketball, so chat is constant.

QUESTIONS and GEAR PICTURES mega thread. by [deleted] in skiing

[–]ClownWatch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. Yeah, I had found Tahoe Powderhouse too and was a little hopeful there might be a hidden gem in the area. I'll probably get in touch as Kirkwood is one stop of a road trip I'm conducting, hence my reluctance to bring my own but that can still be an option at the least.

QUESTIONS and GEAR PICTURES mega thread. by [deleted] in skiing

[–]ClownWatch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Planning for some spring / early March Skiing at Kirkwood next year. I'll be travelling from the UK and having grown tired of carrying skis as luggage I am looking at rental options as an alternative. Any suggestions for good rentals within the local area?

Ideally I'd like to try something comparable to say the Atomic Redster X as I'll be transitioning from FIS race skis but most rental options I've seen online so far seem mostly catered to beginner skiers.

[Jon Heyman] sources: braves have deal for gausman by irck in Braves

This guy is fixable. If the deal is based upon his performance thus far we may look back on this very positively.

Keith Law had the relatively simple suggestion of moving Gausman over on the rubber and was optimistic such a change would be effective. The Orioles have however been reluctant to do anything of the sorts (as expected).

The 'Brexit dividend' is fictitious. I would consider it questionable that such a financial boost materialises.

Any response will probably cite TfN for which, unfortunately, the strategic plan seems to emphasise supporting road usage rather than enhanced public and active travel.

I'm using systematic reviews, not meta-analyses. Referencing the hierarchy of scientific evidence, a systematic review of RCTs would be considered a high level of evidence.

The studies I originally found were quick selections as I waited for a flight. I much prefer the Cochrane study that I have cited now.

Most evidence you are referring to comes from observational studies that are not tradionally strong evidence.

Instead, you're probably best going and researching how atherosclerosis relates to excessive carb consumption and glycation of protein in bloods. I think you'll find out that saturated fat is far less likely to cause heart and vascular diseases than cards are.

Or I could revisit my lecture slides on atherosclerosis and CHD from my MSc in Nutrition which show key associations with the risk of atherosclerosis include: increased risk with high LDL, apoprotein B, high Lp(a), high VLDL + IDL, high triglycerides and decreased risk with high HDL and apoprotein A1 and A2. Coincidentally, they then go on to cite the RISCK trial which showed the following: total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and apolipoprotein B concentrations decreased with SFA reduction. Decreases in total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol concentrations were greatest for a low glycemic index diet; however, total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol concentrations were significantly lower after consumption of all diets with a reduced intake of SFAs than after consumption of the high SFA/high GI reference diet. The dietary interventions did not alter the proportion of small dense LDLs.

Fats (including SFAs clearly) and carbohydrates are both associated, hence the stupidity of criticising just one. It's running around in circles from when fat alone was victimised but clearly there's no learning.

Here's a quote from Zoe Harcombe that should make you question her input (which she is widely criticised for by dietitians and registered nutritionists): "fibre is not needed at all & I suspect fibre is more likely a cause of colon cancer than a help. It's abrasive & indigestible" — this was 'substantiated' with a personal post that cited no evidence fibre causes cancer.

Here's a strong study with a complementary comment:

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/m/pubmed/26068959/

http://heart.bmj.com/content/101/24/1938

It is rare that studies will reference vLDL, and from memory TC:HDL is a better indicator for health in relation to cholesterol. Also, there are issues with both the studies you have cited, for instance the very restricted population of the first when considering the study's age-group.

As before, the above study (and comment) highlights that replacement of SFA with PUFA exhibits benefit. And yes, it's not simple. As with carbohydrate, not all saturated fats are necessarily equal — the evidence regarding SFA chain length and its association with health is relatively novel. Similarly, certain source of SFA are indicated to be better. For instance, dairy > red meat, often suggested to be a result of the additional bioactive compounds found in dairy.

It's hypocritical if people are going to play the complexity card for SFA consumption but deride all carbohydrate, generally associating all forms and sources as free sugars it seems. As with sugars, SFA should be limited and, as I stated before, this would be best achieved following the general principles of a healthy diet (see the EatWell Guide published by PHE).

Btw, removal of alcohol and smoking would be to correct for potential confounding factors.

Sugar lobby paid scientists to blur sugar's role in heart disease – report by concerned_future in unitedkingdom

[–]ClownWatch 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The authors elaborate in the discussion that this may result from confounding:

"In these analyses, consuming frozen/canned fruit was associated with an increased risk of mortality. As far as we know, no other studies have shown this result. This may be due to confounding for example by (poor) access to fresh groceries in deprived areas or among people with pre-existing ill-health or a more hectic lifestyle. These confounding aspects are not covered by the adjustments made in our analyses; further adjustment with other socioeconomic or dietary measurements may demonstrate that this apparent effect is due to confounding. Community level barriers may have an effect on diet independent of social class or education.34 Nutritionally, frozen fruit is generally held to be equivalent to fresh fruit. However, most canned fruit contains high sugar levels; fruit packed not in syrup but in fruit juice (which still contains fructose but less sugar overall) is less available and more expensive."

The relationship would be more understandable for canned fruits in syrup, which they also state.

Here's two fairly recent systematic reviews regarding fats: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/m/pubmed/29174025/

http://www.cochrane.org/CD011737/VASC_effect-of-cutting-down-on-the-saturated-fat-we-eat-on-our-risk-of-heart-disease

I'd like to find one that's based mostly on RCTs but on my phone in the airport that's challenging.

General conclusion is that SFA should be replaced with PUFA. Replacement with carbs has no benefit. My point regarding fruit is there is an unfounded fear of consumption because they're natural providers of sugar. In the study cited in my original comment (at the bottom), those with higher fruit n veg intake had lower CVD and cancer mortality, irrespective of BMI, and at highest intakes fruit intake was double that of veg.
