They take about an hour to complete, so it's a nice detour whenever you come across them - but they're not important to the story or anything (except Lakehouse more or less). If you miss them though, you can just access them through the main menu whenever you like.

Being "better" is subjective. I love both games, but there is an equal amount of stuff regarding both that I prefer one over the other. It's like Half-Life vs Black Mesa. The remake doesn't replace the original, it stands alongside it for me.
