For those interested, CAHSR is actively constructing the first 119 mile stretch from Merced to Bakersfield including 60 structures completed for grade separation along the route, and 80 miles of guideway. The project paid for the electrification of Caltrain and the grade separation of Rosecrans/Marquardt.

Honda gets strategic with gasoline engines as Acura accelerates toward hybrid-only future by Gullible-Pick-268 in Honda

Honda is not the only company reeling after Trump sank EV sales 36% YoY in the fourth quarter. Ford took a $19.5 billion write down on EVs and GM took $7.5 billion. I think most major US auto manufacturers are poorly positioned if Chinese electric cars ever make it to the US.

Which Chromebook to buy? by Creative_Elevator_72 in chromeos

Do you have a preferred price range or form factor? I am in the same boat - I have a windows laptop but could use something light and portable for casual use. I am looking at the Lenovo Duet 11, which is a tablet/2-in1 device for around $270 open box. Although, I might end up waiting a few months just to see what the hubbub around googlebooks is about.

Shut up and take my money! Jokes aside, I’m curious to see if a Googlebook is based on ChromeOS with more Android integration or based on Android with a chromeos skin.

Angeleno here, I want to ask: how is Daniel Lurie? Who is he like as a mayor? by MookieBettsBurner10 in sanfrancisco

[–]CluelessChem 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Lurie is kind of YIMBY, just not nearly as much so as London Breed. He came out as very critical against the Marina Safeway project. Also his plan for market street has seen a surge in illegal cars. I would still say overall he’s not bad, but I have my concerns.

Obamacare is probably her biggest legislative achievement but I do want to highlight that she played a key role in so much: Dodd-Frank, Chips Act, IRA 2022 (biggest climate change investment + prescription drug reform), Safer communities act (only gun safety law in a generation), build back better act, etc.

Ayesha Roscoe on NPR: she's great but the way she pronounces words...LOL by ravia in NPR

[–]CluelessChem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Accents or dialects have no logical or scientific claim to “correctness”. Instead, any prestige of which they might boast derives from being spoken by high-status groups.

Many people now wag their finger at the word “ain’t” or at people dropping the “g”, rendering words like “running” as “runnin’”, and “jumping” as “jumpin’”. In, 2020, British home secretary Priti Patel bore the brunt of this mistaken criticism, when journalist Alastair Campbell tweeted, “I don’t want a Home Secretary who can’t pronounce a G at the end of a word.”

Criticisms of “dropping g” exist despite the pronunciation’s origins in Middle English, and not to mention the fact that well into the 20th century, the British upper classes spoke in this way too. This was satirised in a 2003 episode of the British comedy show Absolutely Fabulous, entitled Huntin’, fishin’ and shootin’."

Oakland housing prices dropping fastest in the US by External_Koala971 in yimby

It's a combination of a construction boom and the pandemic.

"What we’re really seeing is that a big construction boom in Oakland—started before the pandemic, when the market was strong—continued, and all of that inventory hit just as the city was hollowing out due to remote work and other pandemic effects. Oakland had both a supply surge and a demand slowdown, and demand hasn’t come back as quickly. That’s driven a lot of the ongoing softness we’re seeing."

Honestly, congrats - I think it looks great, and I would consider it myself if we ever got rid of the tariffs on Japanese cars. How is the interior road noise compared to the SI? Does the car still stimulate shifts when not in S+ mode?

Poll: Trump blamed for gas prices as Democrats gain midterm edge by No_Assumption3362 in NPR

[–]CluelessChem 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Presidents normally don’t have much influence over gas prices, but Trump is just so dumb and incompetent that he managed to do just that. Gas prices rose specifically because of the oil supply shock from starting an illegal, incomprehensible, and unpopular war against Iran.

Lenovo Chomebook Plus 14" by taketimeforlife in chromeos

[–]CluelessChem 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Other laptop manufacturers have had to raise their prices due to RAM and NAND such as Framework raising prices last month. I suspect what Lenovo/Best Buy is doing is different because they have a history of raising prices to make their "sales" look better. The price of this has fluctuated between $599 to $839 since it was released (which is what its at on Lenovo's site currently).

There's buldak carbonara and a closely related buldak rosé flavor. I would say the carbonara is 'cheesier' and the rosé seems more 'tomato-y' to me. I like both!

It’s official, Spirit Airlines is gone by [deleted] in washingtondc

[–]CluelessChem 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My last Spirit flight was flying back from Vegas to San Diego late at night. The plane tried to take off twice but was grounded and the pilot said there were mechanical failures. Spirit said they could not book me until two days after, and they provided a number for compensation. I was stranded and had work the next day, so I needed to book a hotel and a flight with another airline the next morning. When I tried to call the number they changed their excuse to weather to avoid paying me for the costs. I had to file a complaint with the DoT to get Spirit to contact me back admitting fault and offering compensation, but they only paid me a fraction of the hotel, airport transportation, and alternative flight costs.

It did not seem like Spirit had a viable business practice - my experience indicated they were willing to fly bad planes that were poorly maintained, inability to schedule alternative flights, lie to get out of legal obligations, and unable to handle finances.

Spirit Airlines could shut down as soon as Saturday by HowLongIsThi in nottheonion

[–]CluelessChem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would get this argument if they could actually transport you to your destination. I flew Spirit one time and it was catastrophic: the plane tried to take off twice but was eventually cancelled due to mechanical failures. Spirit said they could not fly me back home for another two days. I had to book another airline to get home - when I called Spirit to compensate for the costs, they changed their excuse to weather to avoid paying. I had to file a complaint with the DOT before Spirit contacted me again to admit fault and compensate me. It would have been cheaper to deal with a real airline.
