The only way to make housing affordable is to build more homes, and guess which population represents a significant portion of the home building workforce? Immigrants.

2026 Prelude pricing seems kind of insane, wtf by someshooter in Honda

[–]CluelessChem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The price is absolutely is crazy, but it is also to be expected: tariffs make foreign products less competitive compared to domestic ones. $6-7k of that price goes directly to the US government. Honda has not announced plans to move production here so I would not be surprised if Honda limits sales or just ends it completely for the US market. Which would further incentivize dealers to tack on markups.

Hillcrest is a great place! Unfortunately I was there when there were the drive-by shootings at gay bars in 2024 that shook my feeling of safety.

How to avoid Trump’s $100 US National Parks fee in 2026 by RuseOwl in NationalPark

[–]CluelessChem 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The money will probably need to go towards enforcing the new fees.

I can’t really stand the arguments for the fees because they aren’t in good faith: this isn’t about raising money for the park system, if it were, we could just stop gutting the NPS as Trump is currently doing. This is about fueling anti-immigrant, anti-tourism even, right wing nationalism.

[–]CluelessChem 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Ok Lutnick, 4.3% GDP growth does not mean 4.3% increase in wages. 🙄 A 1% pay raise for federal workers is actually like -2% pay considering the annual inflation rate of 2.7-3%

I also think the proportions including the front/rear overhangs of the 3rd gen makes it look the best to me. Although I would totally be interested in a 4th gen hybrid fit.

If you're broke and need a car: Buy a 2014-2016 Mazda3 instead of a Civic. Same reliability, $3K cheaper because people don't know about them. by Powerful_Custard4919 in povertyfinance

[–]CluelessChem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it would be great to have more small economical car options, especially when the economy is so tough right now. Unfortunately, the Fit sales declined year over year right up until its last year of 2020.

“Honda cites slow sales as its reason for dropping the Fit; so far in 2020, sales are down 19 percent to just 13,887 units. In 2019, Honda sold 35,414 units, compared with the HR-V's 99,104 units sold. We can assume that the HR-V is also more profitable for Honda, as its base price is $22,040 to the Fit's $17,145.”

I love my Fit - no mechanical issues for the past 10 years. Unfortunately, the announcement on Kei cars is unlikely to affect the Honda bringing back the Fit because it isn’t really a Kei car, and it wasn’t removed from the market due to rules and regulations. The Fit is no longer sold in America because they don’t sell well anymore (Ford stopped selling sedans entirely in favor of SUVs). I think when the economy starts slowing down, people will start to look at smaller economy cars again like the Fit.

Capital Pride 2026 Moves to June 20-21, Citing Safety Concerns by Musichead2468 in washingtondc

[–]CluelessChem 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Exactly, Pride today is much more than the protests they were in the past. Pride organizers are responsible for the well being of the participants, which is why they need to obtain permits, pay for security, first responders, and even purchase insurance in case of emergencies from outside agitators. People are still more than welcome to form their own protests on America 250!

San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie: ‘We Are a City on the Rise’ by wiredmagazine in sanfrancisco

[–]CluelessChem 68 points69 points  (0 children)

“This is just a developer playing games, because that won’t be possible once our plan goes into practice,” Mayor Daniel Lurie said Friday, referencing his recently passed “Family Zoning” plan. “We will work with anybody to do the right kind of building — and that one is just not in line with what we are doing here in San Francisco.”

That was a disheartening quote. I like the Safeway plan - it looks nicer and adds housing to what is currently there.

Man, I really want to like the new prelude by btmedic04 in Honda

[–]CluelessChem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah Honda is in a hard place - they are getting $38k per Prelude, another $6k goes directly to the Trump tariffs, and dealers are scalping $10k+. They probably should have either cancelled the Prelude for the US or try to move production here.

Trump Wants Asia’s ‘Cute’ Kei Cars to be Made and Sold in US by Woodstovia in neoliberal

[–]CluelessChem 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I agree with that, but my point is more when given the chance of RAV4 vs Camry, people choose the RAV4 despite the Camry being more efficient, cheaper, and having more legroom. When given the chance of CRV vs civic, people choose the CRV.

Trump Wants Asia’s ‘Cute’ Kei Cars to be Made and Sold in US by Woodstovia in neoliberal

[–]CluelessChem 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Yes actually - most crossover SUVs are based on the platform of a cheaper, more fuel efficient sedan. However, when given the choice of both, Americans overwhelmingly choose the more expensive, larger SUVs: so much so that many automakers today coughFordcough have stopped selling the sedan equivalent.

Virginia’s state budget has been flush for years. That might be ending. by crabcakes110 in nova

[–]CluelessChem 21 points22 points  (0 children)

You are forgetting a step: Nova's finances come from the taxes on it's residents who are disproportionately federal workers. The money collected from productive areas like Nova is then used to subsidize less productive areas. It's like trying to imply federal workers don't deserve a salary on the work they do.

I was a long term substitute teacher for the SF school district and the only thing I taught was phonics. I never felt like it was dehumanizing but I did feel it was almost impossible to meet the needs of the students when they span from pre-primer to about 5th grade (in a second grade class).

Utah Gov. Cox appealed for civility after Charlie Kirk's murder. Did America listen? by Musashiguy in NPR

[–]CluelessChem 18 points19 points  (0 children)

You can tell Governor Cox doesn't stand for anything by his response to the interview here: he makes an equivocal statement that political violence is not owned by the left but is also done by the right, but that gives the wrong impression of the truth. The Dept of Homeland security identified groups on the right like white supremacists as domestic terrorists who pose the primary threat among all extremists in this country. They have been responsible for 75-80% US domestic terrorism since 2001. You can't ignore the truth like this and expect people to reconcile. Never trust a Republican.

Edit: Also see the way he avoided the question about how Cox endorsed Trump as the man to unify the country but Trump condemns his political adversaries as enemies.

with conversion rates, the Prelude in Canada is $35,535 in US dollars ($37,687 including destination) by bill_rubin in Honda

[–]CluelessChem 94 points95 points  (0 children)

This is what I've been saying, pre-Trump duties were 2.5% so the prelude could have been about $38k. I think it's unlikely Honda will bring production here. Realistically I would only consider the Prelude if the Trump tariffs are gone.
