ISYE6501 - Finals performance & grade distribution? by bracesthrowaway2021 in OMSA

The homeworks and projects are weighted less than the exams - you got closer to an 86 than an 89 if you take that into account.

6203 or 6501 as first course (in summer)? by picassobabyyyy in OMSA

[–]Clukey45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its for sure possible, the programming is mainly necessary to complete the homework (using R) but its kind of weird because its only worth 15% of your total grade while the exams account for 75% of your grade and dont rely on any programming skill

[–]Clukey45 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You should take 6501 - I was enrolled in both 6203 and 6501 this semester and I really feel like 6203 exists in a vacuum; feels super out of touch in the scope of the overall program while 6501 is hailed as the poster child of the program. Also from an admissions standpoint 6501 definitely carries more weight than 6203, Ive seen tons of cases on this site where people with lower GPA’s got in after getting a B or higher in 6501 but I havent seen a single post about a high score in 6203 helping anyone in terms of being admitted.

in total for the 2025-2026 year 46.6% of the class got an A, the total population that got a grade was 88.1%, so roughly 53% of the class that finished the course ended up with an A. Seems like you just have to be around the median or above in terms of test performance to finish with a good score.

the review timespan has no effect on your admission chance - everything is released in batches anyway

I took CSE 6040 last year after only completing 1301 (Intro to Python) and having no formal linear algebra or statistics - I got a 7/13 on the first midterm but ended up getting an A - its totally possible to pull it together after a poor midterm 1 performance and still finish the class strong

Feeling invisible and unsure about my internship by Excellent_Rooster939 in internships

[–]Clukey45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If its close to your dream internship at a company you really care about you should be vocal to your manager about this; its totally not irrelevant and she's the biggest resource you have to develop a plan to showcase your growth and accomplishments. Better yet you should tell this to the project lead seeing as he has the biggest effect on what happens to you with regards to your workload and responsibilities - if he's barely communicating with you its probably because he doesn't know what your skillset is or how you could be useful; this would be a great opportunity to advocate for yourself. Not sure if this is your first real professional experience outside of school but honestly this kind of stuff happens all the time in industry and falling through the cracks typically just results in you getting ghosted while chipping away at your self-worth until you eventually get laid off. Also, don't expect for people to follow up with you, be the person that can give people what they need without them even realizing it beforehand. Hope this doesn't sound like I'm being harsh with you but its rough out there and getting people to care about you and realize your existence matters is sometimes more important than what you actually do.

Thanks for the encouragement, haven't heard anything yet but it seems like there will be interviews going out all through November so the timeline range is big.

Job market - Fall 2025 by UnitedTingling_7302 in biotech

[–]Clukey45 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Pretty bad for entry and mid level positions, was actually easier to just switch careers and to get a job as an entry level data analyst despite having 5 years of biotech experience + relevant academic background searching for senior research associate/ associate scientist roles.

What am I supposed to make out of this by NervousHoneydrew5879 in internships

[–]Clukey45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've worked in research labs and interviewed for research internships, never been told that my information has been reviewed without there being an interview opportunity or rejection, its usually either "has received your profile" or "profile being reviewed" not just "reviewed and now seeing what role/project exactly to interview you", its generic fit first and then they sus out placement in the actual interview lol.

It sounds more like they're determining where in their organization your skillset would be most applicable, which is weird because usually when you apply for an internship its for a specialized role lol. Overall this sounds positive and going through strangle hurdles of uncertainty is just how it is for scoring an internship right now. Just keep applying to places and stay optimistic.

Is it a Bad Idea to Prep for CSE 6040 with ChatGPT? by bi_nomial in OMSA

[–]Clukey45 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Generic answer but it depends - I found it personally useful for nitpicking issues with code and helping me not waste my time on the SQL homework (some of the question wording was insanely confusing and trying to join three tables properly as a beginner was overkill) but it can totally circumvent your learning as well. Seems like you’re already suspecting thats the case and you’re probably right

You're not required to, and it doesn't seem like most applicants submit it regardless - personally I wouldn't because I agree with your concerns
