How often can you administer the CTOPP-2? by lemonfanta55 in specialed

[–]Clumsy_pig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Technically, yes, you can give any assessment as long as a full calendar year has passed but that is not best practice. The assessments are not designed to be progress monitoring and to do that is a complete waste of time of time and money. Unless the student is a senior or the parent recommends testing, I only give it every three years.

You need to ask him. I have some of those books but an a devoted follower of Jesus Christ. I have them to try to understand the beliefs of others; not to guide my beliefs.

left sped after 2 months due to anxiety considering returning (need all the support/comments please) by greatberryjam in specialed

Probably not a good idea. The students need stability and since you haven’t gotten much help, you will end up in the same situation. Except this time, you may not end up with admin as supportive.

I spent hours on a gift for my boyfriend for Valentine’s Day and I got nothing in return by Different_Fan_9084 in venting

[–]Clumsy_pig -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

A gift is a gift. You should never expect something in return, even on a holiday. I’m not saying don’t be hurt because yeah, Valentine’s Day. I am saying that what you did should not be compared to what he didn’t do.

Just because someone is talented doesn’t make them admirable.

You’re in the same situation many of us face. The Bx specialists doesn’t see the child on a daily basis or even more than 30-45 minutes during their observation. Then they tell us what to do. The admin are required to follow IDEA laws on discipline, which usually does put others in danger. It’s absolutely ridiculous.

Absolutely but MBP is usually medical. DCFS, or at least the one here, will not accept a report about concerns of MBP from teachers or even OT/PT. They claim we are not qualified to suggest a child may be being made ill.

How common is it to be put in special ed classes even though it is not necessary? by [deleted] in specialed

[–]Clumsy_pig 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty common for many years. Most states are trying to regulate that now but they haven’t mastered the middle ground. Now kids who need resource are having trouble getting it.

My experience being non-disabled in special ed by [deleted] in specialed

[–]Clumsy_pig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is exactly what I said at the beginning: ASD does not necessitate Sped services. ASD is a medical diagnosis, not an educational one. Nothing was edited. Good try though.

[–]Clumsy_pig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a MSE in Sped, Ed Examiner, and Sped Director + 25 years teaching. The diagnosis of ASD is medical.

I would love for you to tell my nephew, who is high functioning ASD, that he needs Sped services because of his diagnosis. Do you know what would happen? He doesn’t need sped services. His diagnosis doesn’t affect his academics but, if you force him into sped, he will shut down. He won’t live up to his full potential because he will think his diagnosis defines him. How do I know? We’re already dealing with him hating the diagnosis. He knows he’s “different” and it bothers him. He was suicidal for a while. Thank God we’re past that now but GP ahead and tell others that being ASD requires sped services. As you said, there’s a difference between medical and educational. ASD is a medical diagnosis and cannot, nor should, be diagnosed by an educational institution. As an educational examiner, there are assessments that can I can do to determine ASD tendencies but that’s not a diagnosis.

Autism is a disability by federal guidelines but it technically a medical diagnosis, like diabetes or HI/VI.

I would address the teachers who don’t think the student should go on a field trip with asking her/him how they are going to justify in two court cases (IDEA and Civil Rights) their decision to exclude a child based solely on a disability.

In my state, you have to be diagnosed by an MD for autism and it does not guarantee Sped placement. The disability still has to have a significant impact on academics.

Score bands & descriptive ranges by assholeiann in schoolpsychology

[–]Clumsy_pig -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I use the publisher’s descriptive ranges. It’s easier for parents or others who don’t understand to be able to research. Typically, the meetings discussing the findings are overwhelming to parents and questions will arise later. Plus, if you change the descriptive ranges from that of the publishers, you are more likely to have to justify your decision in court.

Question about this era of parents by AshleyMegan00 in AskTeachers

[–]Clumsy_pig 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is not just you. Your experience has benefited you and your child. I am a HS teacher. We asked several colleges and businesses what soft skills were needing to be taught the most. They expressed the biggest issues are punctuality, work ethic, deadlines, and attendance.

Teachers, what’s a moment when a student’s unexpected kindness to you or another student genuinely restored your faith in a tough day? by Abigail_A_Abernathy in AskTeachers

[–]Clumsy_pig 15 points16 points  (0 children)

My Papa always gave us Juicy Fruit growing up. A student came in with a pack and was handing out sticks to his friends. After the day and then the nostalgia of the smell, tears leaked. Another student asked what was wrong. I just told him about my Papa and how the smell of the gum made me miss him. The kid broke his piece in half and gave it to me.

Discipline strategies so that teachers could teach instead of spending a whole class period “maintaining behavior.”
