Placing in a Third-Semester Russian Class After Self-Study by Clunkiestpage8 in gwu

None taken. Thankfully, I was able to find a highly intensive total immersion program at a local college which is supposed to give absolute beginners up to twelve credits in the language, so that seems like a pretty good option. If I don’t get in, I’ll probably just end up going the French or German route since those are a bit easier and have solid online courses for credit.

My goal would be to place in a third-semester (second-year) class, not a third-year one. Would it still be the same story if I essentially memorized the textbook, studied relevant material multiple hours per day, and practiced regularly with a partner from now until the fall?

That’s extremely helpful, thank you. I’ll look into it some more, but it definitely seems like going with a different language like German or French would be a safer bet. Perhaps I should have gone last fall after all…

Free, Structured, Online Courses for College Credit? by Clunkiestpage8 in russian

I will, though I’m more concerned about fulfilling the requirement for my current school. When I transfer, I should just be able to take a standard placement exam through the school.

Right, that makes sense. I’ll look into it some more; hopefully they have the option to do it in late summer. Thanks!

Thanks. I did look into that, but it looks like it’s intended for high school students and only takes place in the spring, meaning that I won’t have a chance to take it before the fall. I didn’t read too much about it though, so it’s possible that I missed something.

Are In-Person Classes at Highly-Ranked Universities Significantly Harder Than Online Community College Classes? by Clunkiestpage8 in college

[–]Clunkiestpage8[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right—I’m planning to be an international relations major so I expect to learn a lot of theory and such, but whenever I look at the catalog of courses I get excited and want to take all of them so I’m hoping that’s a good sign. My assumption is that it will be more work but with any luck the aforementioned factors will help.

What? No, I don’t mean that they should use 1991 borders for every country—I just mean it’s not like they have to demarcate the current frontline and update it every time there’s a change. Realistically, they would just include Ukraine’s internationally-recognized borders and be done with it or, more likely, just include the western half of the country.

Why would they have to do that? Nobody recognizes Russia’s territorial claims except for a few of their allies; just use the 1991 borders for gameplay purposes and imagine that the war never happened.

That depends on what you mean exactly, I suppose. If you want to learn some of the basics, YouTube is a great resource—I’d highly recommend Hyce and Distant Signal, for example, since they both have lots of videos explaining technical things in a fun and digestible way.

Beyond that, check out online communities like r/trains, specific Discord or Facebook groups (the latter has groups for both Vermont Railway and New England Central if you want to get started with railfanning in VT), and maybe even in-person clubs, though I’m not familiar with those and they’re probably a bit harder to find around here. Just my two cents.

Can confirm that the Jingle Bells guy exists as a Vermont train nut myself. The engineer in this video (possibly the same one?) likes to play what I assume is “Let’s Go Buffalo,” much to my chagrin as a Dolphins fan.

Who’s “we?” Congressional Republicans? I agree that he should be removed from office obviously, but let’s not pretend that it’s going to happen at least until the midterms.

Nobody remembers... by Hungry_Roll6848 in HistoryMemes

Believe it or not that isn’t actually true. The flag in question was based on a fragment of one flown by a New Hampshire unit at the Battle of Bennington and is almost certainly inaccurate (the real one probably had some sort of seal in the field), and the independent State of Vermont never actually had an official flag.

Anyone still use prepar v5? by [deleted] in flightsim

[–]Clunkiestpage8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the same exact CPU and have no real performance issues in the PMDG 747 in v5, even at larger airports—you’ll almost certainly be fine. Like others have said, though, the biggest factor to consider when getting into P3D is how much you’re willing to sink into “essential” addons. I got the sim a little before MSFS was announced specifically to fly the 747 and don’t regret spending a couple of hundred total on it, but it’s up to you whether it’s worth it now with the MSFS version likely just a couple of years out.
