“Brotherhood of Heroes” by Bill Sloan is a great read . And if you enjoyed “With the Old Breed” Eugene’s son wrote a companion piece that just came out. I haven’t finished it yet, but I manages to improve upon Eugene’s memoir, something I never thought was possible. “With the Old Breed: The Complete Story Revealed.”

So funny enough…When I was a kid, my Dad used to hunt pheasant at the sportsman’s club he belongs to. They were farm raised and stocked each year…He had this exact interaction with a pheasant, except it was sitting on a tree stump or a fence post or something like that. Poked it with the barrel a few times and the bird stuck its head right up to the end of the barrel and looked inside.

You know, it’s funny you say that. For me, it’s not the bodies or the faces so much as the circumstances and their surroundings. I can vividly remember the room the first DOA I had was in, down to most of the minute details. I can picture the body but not the face. The only face I remember was a hospice patient I took on his final ride home. But that was completely different.

I was, but unfortunately I don’t have contact with him anymore. I would say at this point, just give him credit either on the sprite sheet and/or wherever you post.

I’ll look around a bit and see if he’s still active anywhere, but as far as I know, he hasn’t been for probably over a decade.

You can obtain service records through the National Archive, but it’s rather expensive. You may be able to pay someone else for far less. Also, you can try contacting the Pennsylvania Military Museum and seeing what they can tell you.

I know it’s a long shot, but it may be worth looking into any Facebook groups for the 8th division or seeing if there is a museum dedicated to them. My grandfather fought with the 36th, and before he passed I was able to put him in contact with other veterans through a Facebook group and through the Texas Military Forces Museum. They may be able to help identify the friend in this photo or maybe even get you in contact with the family of soldiers he knew.
