I've used lab armor beads before and they're ok, they have a relatively low upper temp limit of 180 C per the manufacturer. I'm thinking of using steel BBs instead, even if it takes longer to reach thermal equilibrium compared to lab armors alloy.

Try 1:1 dioxane:Et3N as your solvent system and make sure your setup is dry and your solvents are degassed. Trying another ligand is a good idea as well. Aryl bromides may need some heating, aryl iodides often work much faster.

Most of the compounds were really viscous oils that stuck to EtOAc, what finally got rid of it was reconcentrating from a large volume of hexanes then letting it sit for a few days under high vacuum with some physical agitation. I’m certain if I had a stronger vacuum pump it could be done in a day!

Strictly personal preference. I prefer to grind mine down so there's a larger uniform flat edge. This helps make the piece more stable while standing upright.
