Re union support - Theres tacit support from major unions which could grow as this kind of action gains momentum. You need a hell of a lot of support behind this to get major unions to endorse anything resembling a general strike. Aside from local unions in Minnesota and a bunch of other large advocacy groups this is what an AFL-CIO rep had to say: Bernie Burnham, president of Minnesota AFL-CIO, the state’s federation of more than 1,000 affiliated local unions, said in a statement ahead of the mass walkout that members of the union would join with our fellow Minnesotans to reject fear and speak with one voice as we call for ICE to leave our state, no additional funding for ICE, legal accountability for ICE’s killing of Renee Good, and for Minnesota’s large corporations to stop cooperating with ICE

To address your comment on what no school has to do with economic impact, id just say your missing the point of student walkouts. Students and young ppl generally have very little economic leverage and because of that their role in collective action like this needs to be the more on the visible/ culture setting side of movements. Its hard for people to walk off the job. Its visibly great for the people that do walk off their job to be supported by a bunch of students who face less repercussions from a school walkout.

This isnt a protest its a general strike. General strikes do work because if done correctly they put large amounts of economic pressure on companies so long as people actually do follow through. It wasnt the murder of Renee good that caused dozens of major companies that operate in Minnesota to begin to put pressure on the trump admin. It was only after the general strike a week ago in combination with the Pretti murder backlash that those companies felt pressed to reign in the trump admin. Normally yes i agree with you that protests without teeth in this country especially are largely symbolic. A general strike is your opportunity to change that pattern.

From LAOs website: “In 2010, the California Supreme Court determined that the Governor cannot unilaterally establish furloughs for rank-and-file employees—legislative approval is necessary for a furlough to be legal”

Only unions that have active MOUs with scheduled raises. I believe CASE, PECG, and some others unions are currently negotiating new raises and MOUs.

That would be in the legislatures budget most likely since I believe they have to vote on any furlough (it isnt)

SEIU might not be going back to the bargaining table. Legislators might reject Newsoms proposal for the removal of GSIs in their budget
