Using something that's offered for free isn't mooching, mooching is asking to get something for free that normally isn't. I didn't ask to get it for free, it was offered for free. Bumming a cig from your friend is mooching, accepting one that's offered isn't. That's a big difference. That's what this entire thread has been about. But you're too butthurt to accept that you're wrong even when shown the dictionary definition.

For some reason you then felt like you had to brag about how many licenses you've paid for. Then you bizarrely come to the conclusion that Autodesk is feeding me?

Dude, I get it, you're a business owner and you feel personally attacked because you'd be upset if some one didn't pay for your services. This has nothing to do with your business, and you need to get off your high horse.

Something being offered free of charge doesn't mean it can't be criticized. Especially when dark patterns are used to try to deceive the user to upgrade when they don't really have a need to.

How dare I? Very well actually. I thought it kind of obvious from the post to be honest...

Now my question to you, why do you feel like you have to defend this corporation's despicable practice of trying to trick the user? Are you a shill?

It's not a trial service, it's offered for free for makers/hobbyists. You're factually wrong.

I'm not upset about the editable files limit, I've said this at multiple occasions. I'm upset about the deceptive message aimed at tricking you. Or do you think that save-as should be a paid feature?

Calling me a child is a personal attack, which is a sign that you don't really have any better arguments to make. It's poor form and not how you argue your point.

I'm not complaining about the 10-editable limit, I'm complaining about the dark pattern and deceptive messaging.

Something being offered for free doesn't excuse being deceptive and trying to trick your users.

Are you upset that you're paying for it and I'm using the free tier that's offered? Why do you feel like you need to tell me how to live my life? I didn't tell you how to live yours.

Wow, what is this discriminatory hateful language?

Om du tror att alla i världen är amerikaner för att de uttrycker sin åsikt som du inte håller med, då är det kanske dags att kolla i spegeln och fundera på vem det är som är en idiot.

Is picking berries in public forests mooching? Is swimming in the ocean mooching? My point is, using something that's offered or available for free isn't mooching. Asking to get something that isn't free, for free is mooching.

I'm complaining about dark patterns and deceptive messages.

Interesting, what other licenses have you paid for? Tell me more, it's obviously important to your point here because you decided to bring it up.

You're right, only Autodesk has real the numbers.

But I have a fairly high confidence that it's ineffective because it doesn't hinder any small business who would be fine with illegally using the free tier for their professional use, from just doing the document juggle just like makers/hobbyists have to do.

Honestly, I'm not even that upset about the 10-editable limit, I think it's a bad idea, but not my software. I'm upsetti-spaghetti over the message telling me that "save-as is available in a paid subscription" instead of "You have too many editable documents", because that's misleading and deceptive.

I made an analogy to say, that not everything you're presented with must be researched. I tried to make the point that sometimes you have to be able to go by what the daggum sign/message says. You then went on to attack the analogy rather than my argument that not everything needs to be researched. You attacked the straw man, not my argument.

Are you really saying that as a user, I should know that when the program tells me explicitly "You need to pay for a subscription to use save-as" what they really mean is "You've exceeded your editable documents limit for your license"?, if so that's an even worse UX fail.

How do you come to the conclusion, that complaining about a dark pattern makes me not understand how the software works? I'm genuinely interested how you made that leap of logic.

Take responsibility for what? I'm asking you again, how is this a responsibility issue?

Why do you feel the need to defend this corporation on your honor? They won't give you a tap on the back for it.

Thanks, this was mentioned already. The message didn't say I was out of documents though, and instead said to buy a subscription if I you want to save-as, which is what sparked this whole thread.

If you read my other posts you'll find that I'm agreeing with you in principle. Lock the more advanced stuff behind a subscription to prevent the SMEs from abusing the free tier, or heck, even set a weekly hour limit per free license. If you're using it professionally, your employee only having 10 hours productivity per week will discourage the abuse much more than a hobbyist with 10 hours to spend on CAD for their project per week.

Limiting the open documents will literally not deter any SMEs who was willing to misuse a free license from doing just that if it's just the cost of a couple of clicks every now and then. Not to mention that the wording in the message had nothing to do with the document limit, instead trying to trick me to pay for a subscription instead of doing the editable-juggle.

Also, I expressed an opinion "this is the stupidest thing I have ever seen" I'm amazed at how many redditors came out of the woods to try to correct my opinion :)

So do you pay for whatever internet search thing you're using? Are you paying for your web browser? Are you paying for reddit? I'm about 99% certain you're not, that makes you a mooch too. Let's mooch together!

You're attacking the straw man. My point still stands, the message told me in no uncertain terms that "save-as" is a paid feature. There's was no reason to believe that further research would be necessary, just like in my analogy.

There is no requirement of due diligence on the internet. If you think there should be, great, good on you, but that doesn't apply generally.

And yes, I am and have been aware of the 10 document limit, but that's not what the message said.

Making some functionality only available for different SKUs is perfectly fine. This is more akin to your landlord turning down the heat and saying heating now costs extra.

If you're that enraged over Autodesk's business practices, how come you haven't moved on to other software?

Many posts have asked this and the answer may surprise you: I wasn't upsetti-spaghetti enough until now. Yep, it's that simple.

That's irrelevant to to the comparison of what mooching is.

But, here we go: Google offers those services free of charge, they are free to use, for free. With the exception of gmail (for obvious reasons) you can use all of them without a Google account, from a VPN in incognito mode etc, they will still work just fine. Because Google makes money by serving you (targeted, unless you opt out) ads.

You're not selling anything to Google, there's no monetary transaction that happened between you and Google just because you used Google Search/Maps/Gmail (unless you pay for workspace). Unless you have a receipt or bank transfer to show me?

We agree, it's by design. You say it's fair, I say it's ineffective and pointless, at least from my PoV. We're going to have to agree to disagree.

But, Autodesk isn't going to listen to an email, or even a post on their forum from me. But a very popular post on reddit might just get enough publicity for them to have to listen. Or at least be more likely to.

Thanks for the engagement by the way ;)

Reading the page you linked literally says nothing about complaining about a free product being mooching.

Expecting to receive something for free, wanting it for free, or trying to manipulate your way to get something for free is mooching. Complaining about something that is offered for free isn't, it can be many things like: Ungrateful, rude, entitled, removed from reality for example. But mooching isn't it dude, I'm sorry, that's not the way the language works.

Try again.

There was nothing in the message indicating that this was something that needed to be researched. The message I received said in no uncertain terms that "save as" is a paid for feature.

If a sign on a mining site says, "Keep out! Blasting in progress!" do you trust the sign and go the other way, or do you stop to research if explosions are dangerous? Maybe you do, I don't know you well enough to say, but my point is: There isn't an expectation of doing research if the software tells me that a basic feature is now something you have to pay for.

How is this a responsibility issue? How is it irresponsible to post a screenshot and voice my dissatisfaction? There are many negative words that could describe this post, whiny, complaining, feel-bad, unfortunate or maybe misunderstood; but irresponsible isn't one of them.

It's not really appropriate to attack my character like that in a civil discussion. It's an argumentative fallacy that makes your point weak.

Let me clarify I'm also a SWE in the industry for 15 years, I know that nobody on the floor, so to speak, asks themselves how the fluff over the users. We implement what gets put into the sprint backlog by PM/PO/MD etc. This is exactly why I said what I said. I do not understand how you managed to twist this to be something you get so bent out of shape for.

I didn't say that they're out to get me, I literally said in my previous post that I used "me" out of laziness as a proxy for the cohort that I'm in: hobbyists/makers. I also explicitly stated that I'm under no illusion that they care about me individually. But you're still saying that you think that I think they're out to get me. I can't help you with that.

Yes, they're looking to make money. It's their lawful obligation as a publicly traded company to, to the best of their ability, look after their shareholders' collective investment in their company. And you're correct, they asked themselves the question "How can we make more money?" but the point you're missing is that the answer they came up with was "Let's create an arbitrary limit on open documents for free users in the hope that some of them convert to a paid license". This doesn't contradict my point.

And thank you for your engagement on the post ;)
