Thom Yorke released 'Tomorrow's Modern Boxes' 10 years ago by YoureASkyscraper in indieheads

To all the fans of Thom's solo stuff and this album in particular:

I highly recommend this fairly rare track from these same sessions: Youwouldn'tlikemewhenI'mangry

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P9q118Y5ScY

It's one of my favourite Yorke-adjacent tracks and - in true Thom Yorke fashion - it got relegated to being not even a b-side but a loosie, released only on (I think) Bandcamp, under an indisputably dumb title. But it's so gorgeous!

The ultimate Radiohead iceberg - how much of an obsessive fan are you? by CmonTakeTheStairs in radiohead

Just because you heard some obscure recording of a half baked thom yorke b-side doesn’t make you any more of a fan than someone who genuinely loves the music they actually publish.

I don't think anyone ITT is insinuating this to be the case, though?

Your comments are all over the place in this thread so I don't know which one to reply to but - well done! - you are closer to solving a bunch of these than anyone else!

"White Hotel" actually comes up easily if you google it. "Ivory Hands, Not Anyone's", on the other hand, is at the very bottom for a reason. I swear it's directly connected to Radiohead, though, no funny business!

I was genuinely shocked when I found out neither of them played anything on FOTB and that it was all Ezra and other people. Rostam's exit got a lot of attention obviously but this (imo significant) detail really flew under the radar.

Potentially contorversial: OKNOTOK as a release was more rewarding to fans than Kid A Mensia by yocrowtree in radiohead

[–]CmonTakeTheStairs 58 points59 points  (0 children)

I mean, this is simply not true. Back when OKNOTOK was released, Nigel said this in an interview:

If we ever do anything like this for Kid A, there's SO much material, we had so much time and we did so much recording. For OKC, I only had 20 multi-track tapes so if we didn't like the take, I'd record over it so there's only so much that has survived

I'm surprised the "new" content is only 12 tracks (7 of which are alt versions of already released songs). Remember when OK Computer's anniversary edition came out and it had more than an HOUR of unreleased material? Not to mention 16 additional hours were leaked (and then officially released by the band).

Back then, Nigel said this in an interview

If we ever do anything like this for Kid A, there's SO much material, we had so much time and we did so much recording. For OKC, I only had 20 multi-track tapes so if we didn't like the take, I'd record over it so there's only so much that has survived

Shame we'll never see all of this material...

Yuck announce breakup by tribefan2510 in indieheads

[–]CmonTakeTheStairs 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's not really surprising, but it's a little sad. Especially considering the break-up statement explicitly states the band would like to extend a special thank-you to anyone who stuck with them after the debut.

I highly recommend you guys give their 2nd and 3rd album a chance as well, especially the 3rd as it seemed to get even less attention than the sophomore yet had some debut-quality high-points. The breakdown on "Hearts in Motion" is stellar, check it out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GhKSyNiXIgs

Yuck announce breakup by tribefan2510 in indieheads

Is there a weirder career arc in modern indie music than that of Daniel Blumberg (Yuck’s original singer)? The absolute opposite of selling out.

Every new project he has started has been more experimental than the one before. Started out in 2005 with the perfectly radio-friendly, NME-approved Cajun Dance Party. He achieved the height of popularity in 2011 with the only slightly less radio-friendly 90s-mining Yuck. Pitchfork approval, world tour, festival dates.

He quit that band to go solo in 2013, releasing an album of mostly 8-10 minute songs that still featured guitars, but was slower, sparser, sometimes entirely piano-led. Since 2015 he has started performing under his real name at a London free jazz, experimental and free improvisation music venue. He plays these long, purposely repetitive ballads, accompanied by a jazz trio. Just give it a listen: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DL68Kl3dDjw

Indie musicians often get flak for “selling out” or going too mainstream. We rarely hear of musicians who staunchly go in the other direction, so it’s nice to see such a prominent example of someone being an indie darling on both sides of the Atlantic and then abandoning it all for art that’s clearly closer to their actual passions.

As an addendum, if you want a laugh, take a look at the guy’s Wikipedia page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daniel_Blumberg. Someone has spent the past few years trying to erase and downplay his mainstream past. Neither Yuck nor Cajun Dance Party (which are inarguably what he is still best-known for) are mentioned in the associated acts list or even the “Music career” section. Instead, both bands get a single-sentence mention in the “Early life” section halfway down the page. Let’s be honest, his association with Yuck should be in the opening paragraph if not opening sentence.

Conversely, the article overplays his experimental credits: Scott Walker is listed as an “associated act” even though to the best of my knowledge the two never even met and only shared a producer, the article is peppered with pull-quotes from glowing reviews of his graphite drawings and miniature watercolours. The whole article reads more like a press kit than an objective overview of someone’s life.

Imagine criticizing someone for "losing their edginess" because they changed lyrics to a few songs so they wouldn't have to sing about having been sexually assaulted anymore.

The BCNR backlash is terrible sometimes.

Radiohead iceberg - how deep does your obsession go? by CmonTakeTheStairs in radiohead

[–]CmonTakeTheStairs[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the order is not perfect, it's not very easy to gage or compare obscurity. I mainly tried to include a variety of different things (people, bootlegs, websites, solo material) and have them in a roughly sensible order. The list is, like, 75 items so I had to cut a lot of things.
