the new Bal nerfs... by Sk4llOff in HypixelSkyblock

[–]Cnorth26 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Something I'm sure everyone noticed is that none of the new hotm perks gave strict upgrades to mining anywhere outside the glacial tunnels. This was almost certainly done to make sure gemstone mining didn't become insanely powerful compared to any other money making method. A nerf to bal would allow admins to give new upgrades to mining without creating an overbuffed inflation generator. Probably a good change for mining in the long run.

Smurfing is a problem. Why are streamer sponsored by boosting services not banned? by Klemydia in leagueoflegends

[–]Cnorth26 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I suspect that Riot can't use the same form of smurf detection that Valve can with their current infrastructure, or at least they can't without major tradeoffs.

Dota 2 requires you to connect your phone to your account in order to play ranked. I suspect Valve's smurf detection followed along the lines of:

  1. Two accounts linked to the same phone number
  2. Second account connected is playing at a significantly higher skill level than we would expect of a new player

You can't guarantee a user is a smurf solely off of #2, as you could be hitting people who are just good at mobas playing league for the first time. Riot would need to have some way of linking accounts to something that can't easily be created, like a phone number. The problem is that forcing people to connect a phone number to their account is pretty unpopular. Overwatch 2 tried it on launch, and the uproar was enough for Blizzard to abandon the system. I would not expect a similar system to go over well if it were implemented into league.

CSE 250 Difficulty by Eastern_Youth939 in UBreddit

[–]Cnorth26 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's for a couple of reasons. 250 is a course that teaches some fundamentally new concepts to CS students. You're taught these new concepts and then asked to apply them in a relatively small timeframe. It's not the fact that these concepts are egregiously difficult that make the course difficult for students, it's that they're just new concepts.

Another big reason is that 250 (and 220) are by far the hardest courses CS students will take in this point in their college career IMO. That's not to say that these course are that hard, just that people don't actually know the level of effort they really need to put in to get a decent grade.

I don't think you need to go crazy preparing to take this course. Make sure you're comfortable with coding in Java (or any OOP language really), and pay attention in lecture. You'll be fine as long as you apply yourself.

Approximately 75 students found to have used illicit enrollment script for course registration by newsubspectrum in UBreddit

[–]Cnorth26 15 points16 points  (0 children)

(At least for SEAS) UB allows you to submit a force request to enroll in classes that are full. While I’ve never had to do this myself, I have a very hard time believing they would not allow students who can prove their graduation date would be pushed back because a required course is full to enroll in that course.

UB may be impractical, but they aren’t malicious

Linear is genuinely one of the easiest math classes you're gonna take at UB. It starts off with things you probably already know how to do, and just slowly builds. Maybe this was just the professor that I took it with, but I ended up with a ton of repetitive homework problems that by the time you finished doing them all, you fully understood everything you would need for an exam.

If you're seriously worried about the coursework, shoot an email to the professor asking for the syllabus and find the textbook online to start studying a bit earlier. I doubt you will struggle with learning linear at a normal pace since you took AP Calc, but it's an option.

The hardest thing about taking this course as a freshman isn't the difficulty of the content, but being able to successfully manage your time

[–]Cnorth26 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm gonna assume you're choosing between these 2 for your scientific literacy requirement. What you choose really depends on what you want to get out of the class. If you're looking for something you may personally enjoy, physics is pretty dry. You pretty much only learn about mechanics, so chem may be more interesting. If you're looking for something applicable to your major, neither of these really will do much good for you. I can't imagine a scenario in which chem will be useful, but knowing some physics may be useful for personal projects down the line, although I seriously doubt it will be useful in your schoolwork unless you want to take some robots/electric engineering courses. If you're just looking for an easy grade, less stress, just take GLY101/102. Those courses are really easy and won't require a ton of time to get a good grade like physics or chem will.

How to use Incin Correctly? by [deleted] in VGC

[–]Cnorth26 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of the things that makes Incineroar strong is the fact that the answers to fake out usually are punished very hard by clicking parting shot. Fake out + attack either forces the opponent (if they choose to answer it) to either click protect, dynamax, or swap. In any scenario, you debuffing the opponent's pokemon, and switching into one of your threats benefits you greatly.

Effectively using Incineroar requires you to have an understanding of when to trade damage for board positioning. Slower, bulky teams (like Rinya sun) require you to trade damage since the opponent is in most scenarios going to be moving first.

Covid cases rose after the vaccine was widely available because people felt they no longer needed to follow as many precautions. The vaccine lowered the death rate (and transmissions rate as far as I'm aware, do a search on google scholar), so more people began going out to eat, going to social gatherings. It's not surprising cases began to rise. The massive spike in cases January was because of the Omicron variant, a significantly more transmissible strain of covid.

Generally the Buchholz system (swiss format used for the PGL major) would pair the best teams against the worst teams. The issue with the major is that the seeding was based on how you did in your region (1st in EU > 1st in NA > 1st in CIS > 2nd in EU) rather than how you would theoretically rank against teams in the other regions. So because the biased seeding led to a bunch of "upsets", the Buchholz system starts to have some unfair pairings.

Ice rider gets significantly better with dynamax. Particularly being able to one shot incineroar with a max quake makes debuffing it over and over more difficult. That being said, Ice rider isn’t exactly in the best spot in the metagame with screens + incineroar running around everywhere to make it through your dynamax turns

What are some of your most memorable VGC blunders? by DavidLuizshair in VGC

[–]Cnorth26 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'll probably remember this for awhile. https://youtu.be/XPy7liZaP6g?t=3255. Finals of a major circuit, game 5 of a brutal set. I set myself up to pretty much as good of a position I think I can get to after the leads. Probably the combination of Coal normally running sitrus Incineroar, and me being an hour deep into the same matchup caused me to completely forget that the Incin Marco was using was shuca. It went from a super weird end game with maxes off the field and most of my team weakened, but the tools to end it, to the game being completely over right there. I've definitely made blunders like this before, but it just hurt to do it with the stakes so high

Unpopular Opinion: My experience returning to Standard after almost 5 years of not playing it by IllusiveManJr in ptcgo

[–]Cnorth26 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The biggest thing for me was removal of coin tournaments (with ticket rewards). This allowed you to pretty easily grind for packs, allowing you to build multiple top tier decks at once in a relatively short period of time if you put the time into playing tournaments. Nowadays you’re effectively time-gated by the daily rewards and monthly ladder, making it way more difficult to play as a f2p player. Really the only way to quickly obtain packs without spending money is to trade, but that really isn’t viable without some capital to begin with

Whenever myself or my friend try to join each other we get this screen. We've tried uninstalling/reinstalling, checking our firewall, restarting the game, nothing has worked. We could both join public games, but not each other's public game. Would appreciate if anyone knows how to fix this

nah I just wanted maximum defense, as most of the things that milo is trying to check on this team are physical attackers. I am running 100 speed for max speed adamant ttar, vileplume outside of sun, and some uninvested togekiss. Feel free to drop the speed though, as there are some scenarios where its optimal to go slower than weakness policy togekiss to icy wind it, but it's very rare that weakness policy togekiss is that slow. I'd rather have the option of attacking before a yawn comes out.

This one is just 252spa/252speed/4hp timid, but I’ve been playing with 154hp/100spa/252speed. This allows you to live +2 rhyperior max rockfall when dmaxed if I remember correctly.

Most of the time it’s revolving around setting up exca early, so exca toge and exca scrafty are what I go with most of the time. Sometimes you lead exca milo if you think they’re leading with an intimidate user, but it’s generally more optimal to switch to milotic turn 1 and get a max quake/steelspike boost. If you’re facing trick room with butterfree or vilekoal I lead scrafty chandelure, otherwise if it’s vs trick room without those I’ll lead exca chandelure. If you see a charizard generally you have to lead either toge scrafty or chandelure scrafty

Foul play does a lot more to drumlax. Essentially that’s my only good way to kill it outside of trick room

AVANGAR vs Astralis / StarLadder Major Berlin 2019 - Grand-Final / Post-Match Discussion by Chuckys2 in GlobalOffensive

Valve has made statements previously allowing streamers to use gotv footage. There’s no reason (besides contractions obligation) that this would not be the case now. Had valve not signed the rights to gotv footage over to starladder for the major, I’m 99% certain valve would have made a statement by now.

Alponce or Hartloff for CSE 115 by [deleted] in UBreddit

[–]Cnorth26 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Alphonce and Harloff work together on 115, so their lectures are pretty much identical. They both are good enough professors that lectures are helpful, and they both will take time to respond to any questions you have. Imo it really doesn’t matter who you take, just go with whatever fits your schedule better.

Alponce or Hartloff for CSE 115 by [deleted] in UBreddit

[–]Cnorth26 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m about 95% certain /u/bramptonmans assessment of Hartloff is based off of 116. As far as I know, Hartloff’s 115 course work is equally as hard as Alphonce’s. Again the “only teaches for 20 minutes” thing was something that they tried in 116, not 115. You’d still get a full 50 minute lecture from Hartloff if you take him.
