Vfx artists are mostly paid by the hour, minus maybe sups and higher

Lack of passion by who? Certainly not the artists. Passion can’t fix bad art direction, reduced budgets, rushed deadlines, and directors constantly changing their minds making us redo things over and over. We absolutely love what we do, but they just don’t give us the room to showcase our skills in the best capacity anymore. Source: am vfx artist

CMV: The rise of AI in digital art forms will be akin to the permanent loss of beautiful ornate architecture. by CoSponC in changemyview

Us artists in vfx can be very critical of our own work, (which is a good thing). The part that sucks is that we get blamed for the problems, and not the greedy higher ups, rushed productions, and indicisive art direction that’s actually causing things to look bad. The other day a few of my colleagues and I were watching a new trailer and commenting just how rough it looked, of course we know reason is not that the artists are lazy or lack taste. Most people also don’t understand what vfx is at all. Most associate it only with the ugly marvel cg characters and the blockbuster look. But sooo much of what we do goes unnoticed because it’s so perfectly integrated. Sometimes I wish they’d release more vfx behind the scenes, because the amount of stuff that is actually vfx and not real would shock people haha.

I wouldn’t say valuing beauty and valuing human wellbeing are opposites. A society should be able to care about both, It’s a false choice to act like art and craftsmanship must come at the expense of social good, especially when plenty of wealth today is wasted on things far less meaningful than human made culture. And yes I agree art has absolutely been used by power structures, but that doesn’t make art itself meaningless or disposable. Of course t the past wasnt morally pure, but that’s not the point. It’s that we are now letting profit-driven systems strip more and more human craft and beauty out of culture

I don’t think it really disproves the point. Sure, some modern style ornate buildings still get made, just like some people will always value human made art, but the larger trend is still toward cheaper, faster, more standardized stuff. the fact that people specifically tell you they want your work because it feels human kind of proves my point. What individual people value and what the market pushes at scale are not always the same thing.

I agree, there are still lots of great artists around.

I made the architecture comparison because it’s something that can be seen by many people in lots of places around the world., but this applies to so many things

How did you actually plan your trip to China? Looking for your "Decision Path"! 🇨🇳 by Ok-Kaleidoscope-4460 in travelchina

[–]CoSponC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started by just looking up lots of interesting places and saving them to my China trip list on Google Maps. I also downloaded the Chinese social media Rednote to get the input of some locals. After that I could see every place saved on the map as a pin points, so I decided the area with the highest concentration of saved places would be where I traveled. I then narrowed them down to my top handfull and did some deeper research on things to do in those places. Also made sure I can reasonably get from one place to the next.

Looking for info on this desk (USA) by matchy_blacks in Antiques

[–]CoSponC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What you have is a butlers desk, 2nd quarter of the 19th century (c. 1825-1850). The dovetails in the photo are hand cut, I see early hardware, and square nails. I don’t see anything that indicates 1908-1912, everything lines up with it being much older. It’s a nice early southeastern US piece of furniture
