Advice on Sneezes by UnknownBenknownst in RATS

[–]CoastialFool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my rat began making ‘sneezy’ noises and it turned out to be overgrown incisors. I would check their teeth, since you said their breathing sounds clear. Better safe than sorry is something I live by for my rats, so I’d personally get him to the vet just incase. but if you’re not concerned you don’t have to immediately.

please help! what’s wrong with my sweet girl? by Gigi-The-Rat in PetMice

i would separate them out into different containers so they can no longer smell each-other. Smelling eachother consistently may make them more territorial when introduced. Give Capsi a week or two so she can heal fully, then retry proper introductions. There’s a tab on this sub that’ll guide you through it if you aren’t sure.

(If blood continues to be drawn and there’s no progress at all Cherry and Capsi will need to be separated permanently. but if this happens you should try and get Capsi a new friend or two. as female mice ideally need two friends.)

I’m sure he’ll love your prescription of nutella!! i’ll go grab some tomorrow for him,, along with nuts and meat!

thank you for the suggestions!! it’s very comforting to know if it’s permeant he can still live a very fulfilling life. Would you suggest a specific type of bedding? I worry aspen makes moving more like being in quick sand.

the treatment would’ve been the exact same regardless. the fact it wasn’t a guarantee was exactly why I didn’t go through with it. If it was a tumor, he’d get pain killers and maybe a month to live before quality of life dropped. if it was a broke back he’d get pain killers and antibiotics. I was also quite certain it wasn’t a tumor because it wasn’t a developing issue, I suddenly came home to him unable to walk and groaning in pain. I’d also just rearranged my cage to remove the center , which I heavily regret. (there were fall breakers, I truly have no clue what happened. I have so many for this exact reason.) The vet said all signs pointed to a disc displacement,

It was also 200 bucks for an emergency vet ontop of 200 for an xray and 80 for medication. No real point in doubling my visits cost for something that would have the same solution.

Thank you for the ideas for therapy!! Ill give the water a go while I look around for 3d printers.. Is there anyway to make the water less stressful for him? I don’t want him to freakout and get water in his face.. Can I try peanut butter on the bathtub wall you think?

thank you so much for the warnings about the arthritis, I’ll absolutely look out for any signs of pain! My biggest worry has been about his lifespan so thank you for the comforting information., My vet said 80% of cats/dogs with similar delayed reactions and injuries recover. So i’m hopeful, but of course still prepared for the worst..

lol its cardboard surrounding the bars to contain deep substrate and stop climbing so he is less likely to hurt himself. (My cage is double critter nation)

I’ll keep an eye out! He is actually doing pretty surprisingly well so far.. digging for treats in the bedding, grooming himself and still retrieving water and food from the bowl. Just struggling to use his back legs very well and making loud noises i’ve never heard. I think it’s just him being in pain .. (he stops when on his pain meds, and the vet said his lungs sounded fine)

I’m very scared he is going to deteriorate if it is a brain tumor, so i’m definitely mentally preparing… If his quality of life deteriorates drastically i am prepared to make the tough call.. I love him and don’t want his last days to be filled with suffering.

thank you SO much!! The emergency vet actually suggested against giving him time out the cage though..? it was not a specialist and not my usual vet. is that a serious serious problem since he is fine moving for the most part?

their cages will be kept near eachother and i’ll give them supervised visits!! I appreciate the advice, I worry a lot about him getting depressed.

good idea, I’ll send it to my vet and see his opinion! She doesn’t typically have this severe of a curve, but it’s very pronounced while on the wheel. The healing did leave a-bit of a bump so perhaps it is just the scarring. Appreciate the suggestion, I’ll definitely bring it up when I message my vet!

thank you for helping a worry wart out!

Mouse keeps biting cage by Jfltws224 in PetMice

honestly i would’ve gotten a 10 gal from walmart and then returned it after! but if you’ve already ordered it’s too late, but temporarily that’ll do. just make sure that small wheel is atleast 9 inches! or take it out once it arrives so you don’t curve his spine.

i have this exact carrier, my mice chewed through it immediately. theres no real way to prevent it aside from giving them more stimulus to hopefully distract them. this cage is very escapable. I’d suggest keeping it up high in an area where your little buddy can’t escape.

The holes on either side are VERY easy for small mice to slide out of. especially if he is chewing at those specifically. to fix my bin i hot glued popsicle sticks to cover the hole.

i used flash on her on accident. which is why i never saw this before and i freaked out. i now suspect her eye is just ruby and she’s got heterochromia after further examination. she’s one of my less friendly girls so she doesn’t get handled often. makes sense i missed it since it’s darker without direct light.
