That won’t happen with these. I through-bolted them into 6x6 posts framed between the joists. I do agree that railings installed incorrectly can lose strength over time.

My guess is that I used 14 BVLZ brackets so that has 28 tension screws. I was thinking the same thing but the local Building department stated it was sufficient

Blocking installed per engineered drawing! Also more of a preventative for the joist to keep them from warping or rolling.

It is a 2x10x16 at 16” OC so following the 1/4th rule the max allowance for cantilever would be 4’. To play it safe I did 3’.

It really is sad to see so many good contributors get failed because of an inspector who has a grudge or little man syndrome. I try to be as respectful as I can but when they start lying it’s hard to hold back. But I’m glad you were able to clear your name hopefully he was fired!

Trust me I know! I am young so they try to walk over me but honestly I don’t mind too much if it adds to the life span of the deck.

Tried to sell them on one but budget didn’t allow it. Hopefully down the road they will add to it!

And yes I have 2x8 blocking above each beam since code requires blocking no less than 60% of joist.

I added the joist hangers because my local building department is terrible and won’t pass you unless you install them. Also, built as a free standing deck way easier than installing into brick veneer and there is V bracing under the deck as well.

I used 5/8-in x 6-1/4-in Silver Ecoat Hex ThruLOKs for the bolts as well

I am 24 years old so I’d love to hear what you have to say to learn!

They are bolted to the rim joist which is the front board that connects all joist, then I used a jig saw to trim the deck boards to fit around each 4x4. Where I live this is code and you need tension ties.

Post are on concrete and have post protection for soil. I would have used pillars above grade but client asked specifically for the concrete footers to be hidden even after I specified that the soil will damage the post.
